Title: are persimmon shoots good for arrow shaft?
Post by: nsherve on January 31, 2016, 10:25:48 am
Does persimmon do well for arrow shafts? I've looked it up, but everything I've seen was only about making bows with it... I plan to try a bow with it when I get time off of work. I'm asking about its ability in arrows...there are saplings all over my property. Anybody tried it?

Most shoot shafts I'm familiar with do best with second year growth. The problem with some is by the second year they are too big for shafting. My suggestion would be to cut a few appropriate shoots, bundle them together to dry, give them time to dry and season well and give them a try. By going this route you are giving the shoots the best chance to shine.
I have seen here on PA where someone made arrows from water shoots from apple trees and they were first year shoots so it is possible that persimmon would work too.
