I've given away all of the feather backed bows I've made....but I think I'm keep'n this one for a while. :) ;) Been wanting to make a very thin tip static recurve and this one needed a small bridge to keep the string on. I think this one is one of the smoothest drawing and produces the best cast bows I've built so far. Here are the spec's.
Osage
66" ttt
little over 64" ntn
55" @ 28"
Elk leather grip
Horn overlays and bridge
Thanks for looking....
Till next time

That is a beautiful bow DBar, well done with the feathers, by the way what kind of feathers did you use?

Great job on that one, she looks like a serious shooter!
-
Dang that's purdy!! If it shoots half as good as it looks it's a winner.
I'm glad you posted this. I admired the pics of the last one I saw quite a lot. It rivals a good set of snakeskins where looks are concerned. These feather backs are actually the inspiration for something I'm attempting for my niece' bow. She asked for a butterfly bow and all the fabric I found is too flashy or layered. I found a science supply warehouse that will ship small buckets of dried specimens at a reasonable cost, so I ordered on yesterday. Do you see any reason that the same process couldn't be used to apply dried butterfly wings?
I suppose I should have asked before I ordered, but I tend to get ahead of myself in most cases.

That is a dandy big guy!

Thanks ....Ryan, Dan...Dan turkey breast feathers......
Mummmm....Rich, having trouble coming up with a name for her "Little Hussy" sounds pretty good to me. :) ;) Thanks
Steve.......Appreciate and respect any comments from your experienced eyes... thanks again.
Kid...Get to the Classic this year and you can shoot it for yourself.... :) I use a two part epoxy call "Flex Coat" to set the feathers in. I see no reason why you couldn't set butterfly wings the same way. The bodies my be a little difficult. But I have noted before as well as others, don't set or glue anything down with a softer product than the finish over it, because it will crack. Happen to me on a Molly and will never do that again. I use FlexCoat to set/glue the feathers on the back and then put one final finish coat on of the same. Just make sure your in a dust free environment when doing the final coat.
It took about 175 feathers to do the bow...that's a lot of butterflies. :o
Thanks again,
Thank you Chris, means a lot coming from someone who has built as many statics as you.

Bill you are the feather backing expert. That bow looks amazing. I bet it will look even better in the sunlight with all the colors changing in the feathers. I can't wait to see it at moontree
-
Hey Dakota Kid....The more I think about dried butterfly wings, the more I think it might be difficult to keep them flat against the bow, I have trouble keeping the feathers flat. I wait until the epoxy gets tacky then push or tap the feathers down to make sure they are against the bow back.
But, good luck and please report back with your results.....
Thanks Clint ! it will be at Moontree for sure....

For sure, the backing is beautiful. But bow's proportions & graceful curves are what struck me immediately. "Marilyn" would been appropriate name, though not quite macho enough!
Congrats on a very successful outcome!!

Beautiful!

That bow is a beauty Bill. Looks like you got those feathers laid down perfectly and got a super smooth finish on it. Doesn't just look pretty though, also looks like you designed the bow to shoot well and put a good tiller on it to insure that it does. Killer work all around my friend.
