I think I am thinking to hard on this. I can get 1 or 2 points then all my rock goes to poop.
I mostly have flakes. Could they have internal fractures that cause steps ? Or I just get dust.
What would be a good stone to use until I really get the hang of this ? Maybe I need to get some preforms
but where ? I want to my arrow heads and maybe a knife blade once in a while.

Given your ailments, you might consider getting some obsidian. It takes a gentler touch, but it's easy to work and it might cause you less pain. Well....except for the extra cuts. Obsidian seems to demand more blood to yield a point. Josh

Just making suggestion.....I get steps from really hard rock or not making platforms correctly...Keokuk or Burlington are great to work if you do not like glass.
