Hi guys.
I really want to make myself a 3pc takedown, something very compact I can take in my
backpack for field trips (thats why I`m not going for a 2pc takedown).
I plan on making the limbs out of bamboo backed ipe and I`m shooting for 35-40# tops. It`s going
to be a to-go bow for fun/stumping.
The main challeng is the takedown system and the limb alighnment. I`m in a bit of fear to make
a simple bolt and threaded insert system, becuae it means I have to drill through the bamboo and it might split.
I`d be glad to see some suggestion for an easy-to-make system
Thanks in advance

If you drill carefully with the appropriate bit you won't have a problem. You can always temporarily glue a piece of linen or glass cloth in a patch over the to be drilled portion to make sure nothing tears, splits or splinters.
Here is a link to Marc's page that shows a simple method with a thru bolt system that eliminates the threaded insert.

Thanks PatM.
I`d like to see more systems, if there are any....
Oh,any other method to insure limb alighment other then alighment pins?

I'm sure you could just do the same glass/carbon socket used for a two piece and have each limb insert into its own socket.

heres a 3 peice takedown I made some years ago....it worked pretty good

Thanks Dragonman... but I didn`t understand how did you finally attached the limbs?

Did anyone tried to make something like the Bob Lee Stabi-lock system?
Seems like a very good system. I`m thinking of making a combo- groove for limb alighnment and bolt+insert to fasten the limb.
Thoughts? Ideas?

I thought you were already worried about the bolts and pins without adding more stuff?

What I ment is, instead of using a pin for alignment I'll dig a 1/2" wide groove (using a chisel) in the riser pad. Then, I'll glue a 1/2" wide square piece of wood to the limb. The square piece will be inserted to the groove for proper alignment. The fastening will be done with 1 bolt.
It's just seems to be a better solution for me, given my bad experience with alignment pins... My drill sucks...

Sounds like you're replacing one complexity with an even more complex one.

Put an overlay on the end of your limb the bolt goes through. Just like a string overlay. It wont hurt the bamboo at all and you will have a flat spot for the bezel and washer to sit on.
