I finally got instructed how to send these pics.Sorry.These computers are'nt my favorite toy to learn new things on.Sent these with photobucket.Never used to have to use them. Thanks for looking.
-
Thats looking good can't wait to see it finished up
-
Im digging it Ed ;) putting sexy statics on black blocust is gonna deliver the goods ;)
-
Thanks fellas. It was kind of an onery thing[shedding string at 20",compression fractures].I'll explain how I fixed everything later after it's finished.Waiting on snake skins to dry after shooting it in right now.
-
Do I see horn on the belly?
-
Yep you know me well enough for that.Could of used old hedge too but had these laminations done already from my build-a-long post.I call it the conversion bow.Started out with too narrow of width I think.
-
No sinew? Everyone knows that a bow can't be made with just wood and horn.
-
Yep Pat M there is sinew there too.About an ounce per limb.Highly crowned.Out to about 8" from the tip.I've tillered a few bows with 6,7,8 inches of reflex but that's definitely different with the string riding on the belly of the recurve.
-
Wow, looks great
-
Purty.. Great job getting such tight bends....
-
Very graceful lines! Will follow to the finish.
-
Thanks. It was a dry stave to begin with.Steamed the tips 45 minutes each.No steel bands or anything.A teenie bit of splintering which I just super glued back down. They sit 9/16" thick yet.Tried an even more aggressive bend too but that splintered more. This one I think is about 70 degrees of a bend.I could be wrong. The string lifts off from the static belly at about 22".Guys who make these type bows I'm sure know.
-
Got some more pics of this bow and it's construction. Not sure the'll all be in the right order but here goes...lol.Just have the handle wrap to put on.A pic of the brace and full draw wili come then too.
-
That looks awesome so far!
-
I imagine you thinking "I'm getting some compression fractures in my wood... guess I'm making a horn bow!"
Is that 53# at almost 25", and about 60" ntn?
i'm jealous
-
At that time I think it was 50#@24"or 25".I'll send a whole written up description of the bow when I send the full draw pic after the handle wrap gets put on.I'm not doing this like I usually do posting a bow.Usually have it all done and ready to go with pics but it'll get there. Was'nt totally sure the fix would work and had to ask a few people.I've done these before but without the compression fractures....lol.A little more time put into the bow but later I'll show why it was worth it.BL is still in my book one of the best bow woods out there.Course I've only done 2 so far so that might be a preconcieved statement.
-
That one looks blooming awesome! :)
-
Looks great and looks like a nice repair in the fractures. :)
Pappy
-
Finished up great Ed :)
-
Thanks fellas.I know it's not the conventional way of self bow making but a person does what they can to make things work.Farmers' creed.....lol.I've got to mention the names of a couple of fellas by me here who have been a great influence having fun making and shooting long bows.Grant Poindexter and Gary Hutchinson. Both have been archers well over 40 years. They've made self, laminated,& fiberglass bows too many to mention for themselves and other people. They've been giving and patient with me and my natural materials bows.Grant is just a predator plain and simple and so is Gary but Gary likes to push the envelope with his bows and fine tuning of everything.Their seasons start out west after elk, then back to Iowa for whitetail, then to Texas for hogs.Sometimes they go to Wisconsin for bear. Both have been to Alaska numerous times.Gary got a big bull moose with a hickory self bow.Grant shot kudo, wildebeest, and zebra in Africa even.If a person looks in the TTB 4 book you'll see Grant Poindexters' name in the turtle bow section. His BBO bow shot the 4th fastest or the 4th most efficient bow there that day.Garys' bows are a book in themselves. We regularly shoot quite a few 3D shoots during the summer and indoor ranges after hunting season is over.I've been lucky and blessed to have them as friends.
-
That'll do

Anyone know what the skins are?I don't see too many of them on here.
-
That turned out well Ed.
I believe the skins are Garter Snake
-
Bingo....Righto Rama.I used to call or spell them gardner snakes....lol,and did'nt realize it was Badgers' last name.Sorry Steve. No offense given. My girlfriend quickly straightened me out of that spelling mistake....lol.It's probably the only snake in Iowa that is'nt protected.....lol.
About the bow...I don't see or feel any affects of those compression fractures any more.
Well I guess it's time to look like winter here across the midwest with it's first snow.Good to follow a blood trail with, good floor sweep, and for kids to play on that's about it.
Getting off track here so thanks fellas for the atta boy response.
-
Thats a smokin' hot bow you have in the works beadman, it's coming together like a gem. I bet it will spit an arrow pretty nicely.
-
Come on Ed, been long enough we need a full draw 😈
-
Thanks Badly bent.Seen some good bows from you too.
Well Bub you may be right. If I wait long enough though we're getting supposed to be getting snow here.I could use that as a good critical eyeballed background.I'm waiting for this darn leather wrap I want to use for these bulbous handles I use here.I know you solved that problem with a build-a-long done with masking tape I believe????....to use a solid one piece of leather or rawhide or whatever.I did use that once too for rawhide and it worked like a charm.Seems like handle wraps are an issue with me.Wanting to do something different every time.
-
I like that, I had no idea you could steam in curves like that on black locust. That was impressive!
-
Yea Steve .....lol.Me either but thanks. There's a whole lot of things you've done with wood I did'nt realize. My friend Gary [a bow maker mentioned earlier here] says he's seen what you were teaching the fellas on another site where you were teaching those fellas how to design their FG bows or rather they were adopting your designs. Is that true?I forget the name of the site but there was a lot of testing going on.
-
It was a site about a pirate.
-
Is there a reason my pictures of my bow are'nt showing up on my comp any more?......lol.
-
Alright this bow is as good as finished. It's a 64" TTT,62.5" NTN BL composite static recurve.A mouthfull...lol.It pulls 56#@ 28" after tillering and close to 300 arrows. In the beginning I started with a narrower than I wanted 2 year old stave and in it's final layout to avoid pin knots on the edges it ended up about 1.25" wide.I had made a 63"TTT 1 and 5/16" wide bow from the same tree earlier. That one was a slightly D/R holmgaard design.I pre-tillered this static to 20",aligned the tips [I thought] and then sinewed it.Tillering this design puts a lot of near handle bend.As I shot it in it developed compression fractures.I removed as much of them as I could. Then laminated some horn to it's belly.Retillered it to it's present look and weight. This bow shoots smooth with the string coming off the recurve at about 22".The arrow leaves clean and quiet.Hits where I'm looking with a 55 spine arrow. It never did have more than 6.5" of reflex before tillering. After a 3 hour session of shooting it still gives to the arrow close to 5" of reflex. It returns to 5.5" after 3 hours and to 5.75" overnight.Bare bones before handle wrap and finish it weighed 17.05 ounces. The skins are some plains garter snakes caught locally here and the horn is gemsbok. The wraps are red and black silk. The BL is local too.The silencers are a couple of woolys from the little womans yarn bundle. The string is 9 strands of fast flight plus 60" long with a 5 and 5/8" inside of handle brace. The bow gave me some complications but I still look forward to working with BL sometime again.A lot of detailed info I know but it's important and seems to work out that way.I don't make this type of bow on a regular basis.I'll do a lot of target shooting with it and then shoot some game with it hopefully.I am making a 68" hedge holmgaard for a converted compound shooter soon here.I'll get some pics of that on here too. Thanks for looking. Here's some pictures.Still no leather handle.

That is a mighty fine bow Beadman. Thanks taking the time to share it in detail. I get the impression you don't mind a stave that presents a challenge here and there.
I love the big recurve and those garter snakes are a nice touch. I am the same way with handle wraps...feel like I need to do something new each time. :)
-
Well thanks Carson.I'm really not a throw away type guy if I see daylight out of a situation.I really like the way it shoots.Look out varmints, turkey and deer is all I'll say....lol.I do have quite a bit of brain tan here and have done that before. Not to the degree that you put on your bows & I shoot off the knucle too yet.You know a good thick neck piece should work. That would be local leather too....lol.
-
Holy smokes, that's a very cool bow.
A cool combo of some of my favourite bow styles,
that's a next level bow for sure.
It's always fun shooting the ones that take huge hours to make. Cheers
-
Yea I know Wizardgoat.Sometimes I just call them a hybrid.Just joking. It's a static technically.Started sometime in August with it.Meanwhile I was pretty busy here.Building an addition on top of this burm home.Did make another bow while I was waiting though too. Here's a pic of one of those garter snakes in action.Catching his dinner.

I used to get involved in the FG bow design discussion, not sure if anyone ever used anything I suggested or not.
-
Really fine bow Ed, and great pics too.
When I saw the compression fractures, I thought now that's was it.
Great excecution!
-
Yea me too simson.Thanks.From the past I recall you keeping a bow around quite sometime figuring out the solution to it too. You're waiting on a sinew job yourself if I recall correctly. It never hurts to keep trying sometimes with bows. There are things that are the death of a bow for sure though.I finally got off the fence about this handle deal. Some neck brain tan will fill the bill this time.Used bubbys' method of fitting it to this bulbous handle.Worked like a charm again.
Handles done and here's the pics.

Very nice! Sometimes it pays to keep chugging along.
-
Beautiful bow! A creative way to deal with compression fractures for sure. Way to keep at it and turn what could have been firewood into a nice shooting bow!
