Does Osage make a good ELB?
-
Hi
I have seen a number of osage English longbows some self bows others backed. A friend I shoot with has a hickory backed osage bow made by Pip Bikerstaffe that draws 150lb at 36 inches, he is a big chap!

Aye,Osage makes a great D Bow.
-
Yes, it does! A friend I haven`t met for years, owns one. No stringfollow, no other troubles. The ELB was made by an experienced Northgerman bowmaker from Kiel in Schleswig- Holstein, who already made a lot of this kind.

In my humble opinion, I believe backed osage (hickory) makes the best warbow. Even superior to yew It can be made heavy, will last a very long time, and is more readily accessible as a raw material. Osage is tough. I think it's the strongest wood in compression. It will make a heavy warbow, without breaking a sweat.

That would be Nigel canning and his bow is Hickory, Satin wood core and Osage belly

Yes it would be Nigel, thought his new bow was just hickory and osage, got it wrong!
As a matter of interest have you seen him lately? I recently tried to contact him via email about a roving shoot we were organising but had no reply?
