This past weekend a few of us went up the coast to visit some friends, and cut some yew.
Its easy to make an excuse to get up there, such a laid back beautiful spot, I love it.
Our friends 5 year old son Jack has shown lots of interest in archery, ever since I gave a bow to his dad last year.
He cut a yew for me on his property then, even though it was probably just an excuse for him to use his chainsaw. ;)
Heres some photos of the bow.
Its made from piece of old growth yew, as tight rings as yew can get, and a dark heartwood.
Jamie Ravenbeak gifted me a big ol gnarly yew log, and this was a sliver I managed to split off.
Could hardly get this bow out of Jacks hands to take these photos. I think he likes it :)
It was around 38", and 17# at 19". He can pull it about half that, so he's got some room to grow into it.
Cheers guys thanks for looking

We found well over 100 yew trees, and 3 yew groves. Mostly 2nd, or even 3rd or 4th growth stuff, so much nice clean yew, we left alot standing,
Can you spot the yews?

Great job Goat. That little guy will get a lot of use out of that bow. Nice pile of yew logs to. I enjoy seeing pictures of bow wood harvesting. Especially when its different than what I'm used to.
-
Way cool Ryan. Gifting a bow to a kid and harvesting some wood in the same weekend is good stuff!
-
That is just fantastic, I would be feeling high as a kite if I came home with that much yew.
-
Man that must be one hell of a sacred forest. It's great to know that incredible wood is going to be put to such good use.
Hopefully Jack will grow up to be a superlative Bowyer like you and Jamie Ravenbeak! :)
-
Good on you for the kids bow.. Nice haul with the yew
Thanks Leroy
-
Nice work!
-
Happy kid great job man. I'm seriously drooling on my phone right now at that yew I can't wait to get my hands on some one day. That kids bow has stunning colors.
-
Bet lil Jack is politicking with the parents about taking that stick to school for Show'n'Tell!
-
That's an awesome little bow! And I need to go harvest some yew. That looks like quite a load!
-
Congratulations to Jack on a fine new yew bow and to you, Goat, for making the bow and for your harvest. Very Cool! 8)
-
Del may not be jealous of your yew haul, but that doesn't mean I can't be! Nice work, and extra nice work making that little boy so happy. (I love the arrow too!)
-
There's nothing like handing a kid their first bow, good deal right there
-
Did ya get any juniper? I tried it once and loved it.
-
Way to pass it on goat! The happiness of that little boy says it all. Beautiful little bow too!
Looks like you may have an ELB candidate. Beautiful stack of yew bud!

That is indeed a good haul. I know how it feels to come home with some great bow-wood, I also know how it feels to put a smile on a young lad's face with the gift of a bow
-
Great haul. And even better story. Good job on both accounts goat!
-
Nice work Goat! That is a sweet little kids bow. Sound like Jack really appreciates it. Not a bad haul either :) Those are some nice yew poles.
-
Thanks guys! My yew stash is back to where it should be now.
Bruce, I've made a few juniper bows, and have cut some in the interior of BC.
It's more of a desert tree/shrub in these parts, and this is the only place on the coast
where Rocky Mountain junipers grow, and grow huge too.

happy Jack --- sweet bow!
