So, few weeks ago Rylie says "Granpa, I wanna make my own bow". This should be fun!
We made trip to Home Depot to find some bow-appropriate wood. Lucky day! Found couple maple boards. Grainwise, one of the maple boards is as good as a board can be for a bow.
Couple days later she cut that maple board to width & length. Then there's bunch of measuring & line-drawing need to do!

We'll try to post updates as progress is made.
-
Beginning of the school year and athletics/band/etc. have caused delay in our bow-building saga. Today we had couple hours together.
So . . . . .
Gotta rough out width profile of limbs. Yeah, that's a scrollsaw we are abusing. Some day I may find the $$ and shop space for a bandsaw.
Then Rylie dumped my bin of offcuts on the floor in search of the perfect combo of wood shades for her handle.
Of course, what she picked were species that I no longer have in chunks big enough for handle lams. So next step is a run to local hardwood store.
Hopefully, we'll remember to do an update!
-
Nice build-a-long. Its always good to see a kid interested in making a bow.
I might have to trade you for a good Maple board next year at the Classic ;) Keep an eye out for a good one if you don't mind.
-
:o Way toooo Cool 8) Mike ...........I've got three G-kids and I have the same issues..........way to go passing it forward, get the kids involved.

That's too cool Mike. I hope she has a blast and makes a liller bow.

will do.

Atta boy gramps, you two should have a lot of fun and some good memories by the time your done with the project. :)
-
Way to go Mike this is something she won't forget have a blast helping her along
-
Thanks for the encouragement, guys. We'll need it.
Many years ago, there was a thought in my head that teaching should be my chosen profession. Fortunately ... for the potential students ... my career went down another path. I'm a lousy teacher. Rylie understands that, and still wants to give it a go.
Hopefully, we'll emerge on the other side of this adventure with bow in hand and relationship intact.
::)
-
NICE ! Great project - Bob.
-
Very cool, love seeing kids get into this stuff. Looking forward to seeing how it works out for her. :)

What great bonding time, can't beat it!

Can't agree! You managed to teach this old goat to tie a bowyers knot! ;D

Rylie came to our place after school today. She got her work-in-progress bow out and got it a few more steps toward completion.
She caught on fast to the belt sander and table saw.
Bow's front profile is now shaped and parts to make built up riser and flipped tips are cut to size. Now we have a bunch of gluing to do!
Her mom didn't seem real pleased with all the sawdust on her lil girl's school clothes! >:D

Knoll,
Ya may or may not be a good teacher, but your a GREAT grandpa, sir.... She'll be growed before ya know it, off on her own life and all that.....but gauranteed she wont ever forget Gramps.
This memory time is as good as it gets for any man, good on ya

She seems to enjoy the challenge. I'm enjoying every minute of it!
-
Mike, glad to see you and your granddaughter building a bow! That is definitely quality time! Please keep posting as it progresses .

Her mom didn't seem real pleased with all the sawdust on Riley's school clothes! >:D
That's one of the perks of being a grandparent, you get to irritate your kids while you spoil theirs. A little payback >:D >:D >:D
-
Sawdust builds character at least thats my story looking good
-
Cool project I hope that my nieces will have a interest in doing something last me this when they're old enough :D
And I'm very glad to see you have her using the saw safely ;) I had a bad accident on a table saw myself so now I can be a tad bit of a safety nazi when teaching new people how to use one :o >:D
-
Outstanding Grandpa! I look forward to seeing the progress on the joint project.
-
Good job gramps! She is learning SO much more than just building a bow.
-
I'm hoping so. ;)
-
Rylie builds her own bow . . . continued
Rylie and one of her friends, Taylor, came to the house after school. Mixed up a batch of Unibond. Then spent bit of time together getting some of the gluing done on her bow. Annnnd, did some gluing on my bow too!
They made a good team and we got the laminations clamped down in no time.

And the lil ladies also found time for selfies.
Next time we will get back to wood shaping.
-
That is a very cool project Mike. Thanks for the updates.
-
Results of their handiwork. Since it was forecast to get a bit cold last night, The Wife agreed to bringing glue-ups into house. I mean how could a loving Grandma refuse 2 adorable girls saying "P L E A S E, Grandmaaaaaa!"

I can tell Mike is having fun with this
-
Took a few pics, but not as many as should. About 6 of us made it to Chris' place. Arrows were tapered, bows tillered, and lotsa glue spread.
As usual with these events, I hauled far more projects there than any sensible person would think could possibly be completed!
Here's some pics of the going's on.
Gramps, what are you gonna do with ALL that stuff you've loaded in the car?
On arrival, we were greeted by the puppy greeter.
Chris' barn is a big one. But this lil stove was more than up to the task.
With this sock cap, I do look a bit like Papa Smurf!
There's HOW MANY of these blocks to glue on tonight?
It being a school night, had to leave by 9:00. And that time came all too quickly. More fun 'n' games next time!
-
Sounds like fun
-
Great story, thoroughly enjoying it. Riley is coming along just fine on her bow.
-
Thanksgiving school break will likely give us opportunity to get back on this adventure.
-
I can't wait to see more of your build with your granddaughter. You are creating memories that I hope to have one day!
Patrick

My 11-year-old grandgirl, Rylie, has a bow started, but she's not worked on it for couple months. Told her back then that if she gets it completed by Classic time that I'd take her along this year.
Couple days ago I reminded her that it's just 2 months (exaggerated a bit) 'til Classic. Tick ... tock ... tick ... tock.
Yesterday she called, saying, "Papa, may I come over tomorrow to work on my bow?"
Of course, she got an affirmative.
So today we warmed up the shop area and got to work.
And then she cleaned the mess up!
Got things roughed out.
She rightfully is pleased with herself.
AND we have date for tomorrow night's bow-building gathering too!
-
Thats what its all about. :)
Hope to see her shooting it at the classic.
-
Cool! That's coming right along! Josh
-
Good times there Mike! I got to ask though are you guys glueing a lam to help hold that tip together? Seems a little risky having that nock two glue joints away from the main bow
-
Done several of these, Paul. Is unibond joints, non-bending, and just 20ish lb. Am gonna cut approx 1/2" off each tip.
There's a short red elm stave with her name on it after we get this one shootin'.
-
That'll be a sharp looking bow when you two are done, glad to see she's sticking with it.
-
Be glad to see you and her at the Classic.............we'll have to shoot around together..

Thanks for the updates. Looks like she is sticking with the build.
-
Looking good there Mike! Your teaching here right for sure. Plus I'm sure it's some good quality time spent with her as well. One thing for sure, she will remember this as long as she lives. Can't wait for your next update!
Patrick

Looks like she is coming along nicely, can't wait to see it shooting and up close. ;) :)

The fun has started!
Finally tied on a tillering string and bent it a little. Floor tiller was obviously not right on, but think can correct quickly.
-
That is looking pretty good. Your tip overlays make me nervous though.
-
Picked up Rylie today after basketball practice. We drove to a friend's place to use his bandsaw for cutting a deflex/reflex caul. Then back to my shop for tillering session.
Didn't take alot of time to get the bow to 24# @ 17" and 3 1/2" brace.
She'll be back out here Thursday and am sure will then be shooting it.
-
Knoll, that truly made me laugh! Sounds like you have one heck of a granddaughter there!
The bow is looking really nice to Miss Rylie! Your papa is a good guy and I know if you don't quite understand that he would take the time to explain it better for you. Good job buddy!
Patrick
-
Now we have her bow tillered out to 23# @ 18" and full 5" brace height.
Then noticed that one limb is twisting quite severely. Encountered this just 2x before with board bows and, in both cases, proved to be fatal for the bow.
So last night clamped some weights on the offending limb, heated it up, and watched limb twist in opposite direction. Then let it sit like that overnight. This morning it's twisted in opposite direction ... we'll see what the day brings.
-
Stribg it up and let it sweat Mike, might bring it around
-
Good idea bubby.
Patrick
-
Current tiller .... 5" bh and 20# @ 22".
Immediately after shooting 50-60 arrows.
Will let Rylie shoot it for awhile. Then decide next steps.
-
Well done, young lady! 8)

Looking good Riley!! Now to outshoot papa😜

Rylie was at the house this eve. But she spent most of time doin' homework ... and watching The Walking Dead with me.
We did squeeze in a bit of work time and glued snakeskin fabric backing on. But I forgot to take pics ... bad papa!
Glue was still very wet when her mom insisted they needed to go home. She was concerned that pattern would never show through the glue.
She wants to go to her 1st 3D shoot next Sunday. She has lots to get accomplished this week if she's gonna shoot the new bow. Think she'll get 'er done??
-
Heck yeah Mike, you two can do it
-
Absolutely! Riley and papa can get er done!
Just remember the pics!
Patrick
-
This was exactly what I needed to see this morning. Thank you for sharing the whole project. Really nice looking bow.
-
It's cool if this lil tale inspires other projects out there.
Bit of work with utility knife, file, and sandpaper cleaned up the backing nicely.
Two coats of tung oil are now on the stick. One more to go.
-
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
-
HA!
We are on homestretch!
-
Awesome. Im glad you made this a follow along and can't wait to see the final product!
-
Rylie, that is one nice bow you and your papa built. I hope you enjoy it and make sure you out shoot him at your 3D shoot Sunday.
-
Applied 3 coats of tung oil couple days ago. Added 2 coats of rub-on poly yesterday.
Today Rylie was available for couple hours. So we did a "bow signing" and added 3rd coat of poly.
Think she's REALLY focused on 2nd half of April?

Definitely on home stretch now!
-
Well done !
can't wait to see her shooting it in person.
-
Very cool Mike. Rylie is an awesome girl.
-
Thats great, you two are gonna have a great time in Tenn. this spring. :)
-
Great job getting her involved Mike. Now she knows how much work it takes to make a bow. I'm sure she will treasure it.
-
Now she knows how much work it takes to make a bow.
YES!
And I've been reminded how challenging it is to aspire to be a teacher.
Thanks, guys, for the positives.
-
Well done Papa and Rylie! That bow sure is a looker! Can't wait to see her shooting it! This is something she will cherish for a lifetime.
Patrick
-
What a great day!
Carol got up with Rylie and I, so we made a run to Waffle House for breakfast before heading over to today's 3D shoot.
Then was time to load up gear and get going.

Yep, great day!!
-
Exceptional!!! 8)
-
Awesome Mike, how did she shoot with that great bow
-
She was shooting high/high/high. Maybe her 1/4" arrows aren't appropriate for this bow. Let her use couple of long 5/16" I was carrying. Started hittin' where she was aiming.
Guess she's gonna need arrows now!
Sheeeez! :)
ps ... says gonna "politic" with her momma re Memorial weekend in MI ... !
-
Way to go Knoll and Riley.Maybe you could put maple arrows with a maple bow....ha ha.
-
Gonna " politic " for Marshall that would be cool
-
Very cool Mike!
Rylie, that's a very nice bow that your papa helped you make!
Glad I was able to watch from the sidelines on this one. Maybe one day I will be able to help a grandchild of mine make a bow. Thanks!
Patrick
-
Rylie, you'll cherish that bow for the rest of your life. You'll cherish the time spent with Grandpa even more. Congratulations on a beauty! Jawge
-
Great times in the neighborhood. Way to go you two!
-
Wow. Rylie makes a better bow than me, and from the looks of that shot on the deer, shoots better than me too.
Very nice job on both.
Papa you should be proud.
Hope to meet you both at The Tennessee Classic.
-
After we ripped Rylie's bow blank there was just enough left to make another ... a medium-weight. So I was working on it while she/I were moving ahead with hers. Made it similar, in some respects, to Rylie's. So we'll likely shoot 'em together at The Classic in few weeks.
Maple limbs. 64" ttt, 1 3/4" @ fades, straight tapering to 1/2" tips. Linen backing.

Thanks for looking.

You two have something special. I hope she enjoys the Classic and sticks with primitive archery as she grows up.
-
Cool Mike, now if she out shoots you wellllllll......
-
Outshootin' me is quite possible .... this body is gettin' reeeally old!
Clint .... we'll see how special our relationship is after 4-5 days together. :-\
-
Cool bow Mike! You and your granddaughter will be quite the pair at the classic!
Patrick
-
I sure have enjoyed this story with you and your granddaughter Mike. Thanks for bringing us all along with you and Rylie.
Have fun at The Classic.

-
Wow she did a great job and came out with a stylin' bow at the end! Congratulations to the both of you on working so well together!
