Title: More fun with obsidian
Post by: Stringman on September 10, 2015, 11:29:14 am
Made another set of hunters, (this time for sleek) and a couple blades. Nothing ground breaking, just checking in so you all don't forget about me  ;D

Blades are out of rainbow, but it's hard to get it to show up.
God Bless!

Ben-Jammin, any time you get around to it, will be soon enough. No doubt the angle might not be perfect to show case the color, but it does show up some. Just can't get the phone camera to pick it up.

Call me up Patrick, I'm sure I can get you into something that fits.

Tracker they are prolly tween 1/4" - 3/8", but I don't have em on me. I can check later.

Just wondering, I'm having trouble with my knife blades breaking and I think it's because I'm trying to get too thin. Need to get arrowheads knocked out anyways but I have a bunch of antler begging for knives and this just makes me want to make a knife even more!

Lol, well this wouldn't be my choice as a throwing knife.  >:D

If I was gonna make an everyday knife for skinnin, I would probably make it a little thicker.

Nicely made and efficiently proportioned.

Jeff there is a grain in rainbow obsidian that has to be followed for the rainbow colors to catch the light right. If your piece is not oriented correctly then you just have translucent obsidian.

not really a "grain" as grains go - there are layers of "color" in the matrix. If you look at all sides of the piece you should be able to see lines on at least two sides of the piece, if you break parallel to the lines ou should get color. If you break perpendicular to the lines you may be able to see the lines in the piece depending on the degree of silica in the lava flow. Higher silica means a clearer piece of obsidian.  But you will not usually be able to see any color. The color is a result of light reflecting off of the different mineral "layers" in the matrix.

I do not have time today... I will try to find some good pieces tomorrow and get some pics up.....

Those points will be be deadly on the end of a feathered shaft. Scary nice edges on those babies Scott, just looking at them makes we want to get out after deer.
