Title: trying to learn here
Post by: sleek on September 06, 2015, 07:43:05 pm
So I have teied and am somewhat successful at breaking rocks using a hammer stone. I can even make a triangle. Then I snap it in half every time.  So perhaps a need an elk billet. I have a rack to use. What exactly am I making and how do I use it?

Sleek how thick is the triangle when you snap it

Yeah, more info on the preform would help, snapping can happen at different stages for different reasons; usually a support issue. As for elk billets; elk is not as preferred as moose but it'll work. Being that's what you have you can make some tools from it. The billets come from the base where it attaches to the skull, you cut it and round off that part. Pressure flakers/punches come from the tines and you can use the odds/ends for other things so save 'em.

They snap at all different stages. I will break a few and take pics.

… Just remembered this video from Youtube. Here's the first of a two part video where he makes tools from an elk shed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAKMEXfBEdY

He discusses his tools in the beginning but makes a billet from the elk shed towards the end and on Part II.
