Title: English Warbow Arrows for Magazine
Post by: WillS on August 29, 2015, 06:08:04 am
I was asked a while back to provide some medieval archery equipment for History of War Magazine, and the guys there took some really nice photographs for the feature (a 6 page article that I helped write on the medieval bow and arrows, and the way they were used during the 100 Years War)

Thought I'd stick some of the pics in here, as I'll never be able to get better shots than these of my stuff!

Well that would depend how your particular boat is kept floating...

Yes.  Yes it is.

Glad you guys like 'em!

Very nice, arrows and bow looks great but I especially like the quiver. Very cool. :)

I agree about the quiver - it seems difficult to find a good shot of a 'proper' one to aim at when I start making 'em.

If you need any help with one, just PM me and I'll give you as much help as I can.  They're nice and simple to make, luckily!

That sounds good to me - I need a bow first then some arrows so I'll probably be messaging you in about 2027 at the rate I'm progressing...

Thank you.

I'm on the same page as you.  It's incredibly frustrating when you choose (for whatever reason) to make your own stuff instead of buying it.  It's worth it at the end however!  You need to get yourself to a shoot of some sort though.  You'd be amazed what you learn when you're actually holding the bows you want to make.

I'm particularly impressed by the whipping on your fletchings. That's alot of wraps to keep as uniform as they are. Do you use some kind of jig or is that the result of many arrows worth of experience?

Unfortunately its just practice!

When I started doing it I would however make tiny pencil marks along the shaft, 5 marks per inch, and use them as a guide.  That got my eye in, and I worked out how many feather barbs I needed per wrap.  Now I can do it without thinking, but it just takes a lot of arrows really!
