I saw that there have been some recent posts about black locust and bows, so I decided to post a bow I made awhile ago (actually finished it at last years TN Classic) but never posted. The bow was modeled after the Cherokee hunting bow shown in Steve Allely and Jim Hamm's, Encyclopedia of Native American-Bows, Arrows, and Quivers. Here are the stats: Black Locust heartwood-this bow was all heartwood, but I've read of using sapwood for the back, 50# @ 28", 66" long, 1 and 4/16" at the handle tapering to 7/8" at the nocks. Treated with several coats of tru-oil. The string is B-50. I tryed making a groundhog hide string but it didn't work out :P; cut the strands too thin. So far, she has taken very little set as shown in the picture. This bow is fun too shoot and I look forward to making more of the same ilk in the future (hopefully with more primitive tools). :)

Glad you finally posted your BL D-Bow. Very nice and bookmarked for Feb Self Bow of the Month, too.
-
Looks a little spiffier and gussied-up than the last time I saw it. Nice bow, Jonathan- I like the Cherokee/Woodland bows a lot. Now how the heck do you sit on your couch with it fastened vertically to the wall like that? ;D
-
Really nice bow, tiller looks great! I've been meaning to make one of those, I think yours will inspire me to get started on one.

Thanks fellas, That dog is ferocious, she took down a wooly mammoth the other day. ;D Hillbilly, we have one of those rotating rooms, that's good for displaying bows like that.
-
Good looking bow...I'm sure it would get the job done. ;)
-
That's narrower than what I have done but I like it and will try to make one like it. Does it shoot smoothly?
-
Smooth as a babies bottom. ;D Have you tried using sapwood and heartwood? anyone else?
-
I like these simple sticks ;)
-
thats my kind of bow , great job
-
Great minds think alike! I just about finished up a Cherokee style D bow, it's not the best I've made, but it'll probably pop up here in a couple of days....
Good looking bow, I've got to get my hands on some Black Locust. ;)

Nice bow I like the look of the whole bow following an arc. I'm thinking of giving the D bow a try.
-
Thats a nice looking bow and a good low stress design for locust to...... ;D

Nice bow, Jonathan. These style bows are surprising effective. I want to make another, now, and since I have such bad luck with locust(frets) this might just be the challenge I need...maybe I'll even try it with some sapwood. I've successfully left sapwood on osage and mulberry. I don't see why not.
How's that boy? Pat

Nice job, nice tiller, sweet , simple and I am sure deadly. :)

Thanks again everyone. :) It's nice to hear such good responses. Pat, the boy is doing great. He seems to be growing exponentially; its hard to keep an outfit on him. Here's a pic of him from the other day (8 weeks)...I can't help it, im a proud dad!

Nice bow. Turned out well

D- bows are very interesting bows. Easy to tiller and later very reliable. Even shorter staves can be worked out for bows to full drawlength, because these bows forgive a lot for they are not as stressed as high performance bows
You made a goog job.
Regards Uwe

Great bow! I'm thinking of trying the same style. All I have is a red oak stave that's about 6' and 1 3/8" thick. I was thinking about keeping the handle section 1 3/8" and tapering it down. Not sure what a good length would be for the red oak or if it needs to be backed. Would 65" be good?
Has anyone made a Cherokee style "D" bow out of red oak? Thanks.

Nice looking bow. I just happen to have a B.L. stave sitting in the next room.I think you just showed me the design.( I have not heard good things about B.L. sapwood.)
