Title: Osage longbow - eastern woodland style - 54# @ 29"
Post by: Carson (CMB) on July 15, 2015, 05:25:45 pm
Osage longbow. 68" nock to nock. 54# at 29" draw
Mammoth Ivory striekplate inlay. Pin nocks.
Bends through the handle. Handle wrapped with braintan buckskin dyed with walnut hulls.
This bow was made as an osage version of a eastern woodland style bow. It turned out to be quite pleasure to shoot. Not the fastest bow, but not slow by any means. It is very, very forgiving to shoot. Draws very smooth and hits right where you look.
It had some drying checks at the ends that fortunately fell in the center of the pin nocks. Tips of pin nocks wrapped with sinew. Recesses were carved in the wood prior to wrapping the sinew to leave the sinew flush with the surface.
Finished with a good thorough burnishing then beeswaxed.
Thanks for looking

Very cool, nice bit of character.
Any medieval Englishman would know what to do with it too :)
It would be be interesting to have seen a NA and a medieval English peasant talking about bows (ignoring the language problems of course)

Sharp bow, I like the contrast between the character upper and straight bottom limb, plus those stats would fit me to a T.

Vey cool, Carson.  8)  Will you post a pic of the belly side of one or the hoop-d-dos. I'm working on an osage bow with a similar hoop-d-do and I want to see how you worked them on the belly.

Pat, I am sorry, I dont have a decent pic of the belly there, and the bow is already off to Pennsylvania. I found the grain was less  reliable of a predictor of limb thickness there.  I did notice that the outer whoop-d-doo started to bend a touch when I thought it was still a little thick by feel. Wish I had more insight on how to treat those.

Vey cool, Carson.  8)  Will you post a pic of the belly side of one or the hoop-d-dos. I'm working on an osage bow with a similar hoop-d-do and I want to see how you worked them on the belly.

Little to long to be eastern wood land. 60,65 inch bow was longggggggg. I don't know any eastern tribe at any time that made 68" bows.

  Nice bow anyways.

The Cherokee war bows were long. One in Hamm/Allely's Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows and Quivers(pg82) is 68 1/8" long.

sweeeeet!!! I just finished sanding my hickory Cherokee bow, it had a lot of backset and the tiller came out a little different from yours. Its the second or third eastern style bow ive made and the simplicity and the way they shoot makes it easy to see why that style was used. Not a rocket launcher but very accurate and a sweet draw with no stack. they have a little hand shock which can be remedied by a heaver arrow. beautiful bow man!

Thanks guys.

Crooketarrow there are a number of 68" long eastern bows in the Alleley and Hamm Encyclopedia of Native American Bows, Arrows, Quivers. Certainly seems to be the upper range of what is presented in that book, but 68" is not too long to be representative of these bows.

Beartail, you nailed it. They are smooth shooters, and yes a good hunting arrow weight is what these bows like. I never shot anything lighter than a 600 grn out of it, so didnt think to mention it.
