Title: Vine maple "teen" bow design
Post by: dane lund on June 26, 2015, 01:27:29 pm
Up till now, I've only made kids bows out of vine maple and design hasn't been too critical.
I've got a nice 60" VM stave, and need to get a nice 30lb, 24" draw bow out of it for my 13yr old grandson.

Any advice on layout would be greatly appreciated. Pyramid? Handle and fades, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Been around plenty of VM, never actually used any for myself. Id suggest the full length you have, 1 1/2" wide at the fades with a 4" handle and 1 1/2" fades. Id make a flat bow only because Im not a pyramid fan. Im sure either is fine.

Dane,

You might be familiar with my user name. That stave is cut and designed for a "D" BOW. Tiller the stave so that is barely bends through the handle....ever so slightly. The tips should be as small as reasonable.

OK,  I'm an idiot.  What is a D bow?  Are we talking like an English longbow?

Yes, but you don't need the length with vine maple. ;) ;)
