hey guys i have three well seasoned red oak staves with the bark and sapwood still on, what should i do with the sapwood ???
i haven't used red oak sense my first failed attempt at a board bow lol.
-
I chased down and got rid of it in the 3 red oak stave bows I did. They turned out nice.
-
Generally red oak is treated as a whitewood and the wood under the bark is the back.

Sounds like you could go either way. Maybe try both and do some comparison?
-
The heartwood seems more brittle to me I'd bark it and go from there
-
for no reason backed by good evidence I avoid sapwood in red oak.
It just seems a lot weaker than the heartwood.
