I'm still pounding away on this stuff. A little better spalling thanks to some hours watching Jack Crafty. This was all done with a quartz 1 pound hammer stone. I'll see if I can get some flaking done on it tomorrow.
-
That is cool looking stone. Did you go out and collect it yourself?
-
Wonderstone is TOUGH... so I've heard. I never tried it. That looks like good hammerstone work. :) I tend to snap workpieces when they get thin and I'm smacking away with a hammerstone.
-
I did collect it myself. As well as heat treat it. It is very hard. Very Very Hard.
-
Vernon hills isn't that by Tooele. That's about a 3 hour drive for me. I would like to try knapping some of that stone.
-
It is Redhand. From Tooele drive south to Vernon. Pass through the town (stop at the silver spur for a bite to eat) keep going south until you get the the railroad (about 4 miles) turn left. The dirt road is a monster if its wet. You can see the pit from down the hill a bit. It is about 2 miles from the highway to the pit. Someone takes a front end loader and digs it out, so it is scattered all over the ground. Some is very coarse, and hasn't been good for knapping. I just took my rock hammer and broke a corner off chunks until I found good chunks. Also, it doesn't flake very well, it is very very tough. Mine has been heat treated at 680 degrees for 12 hours. I'm am going to try another batch at a higher temp to see if that improves the flaking. If you don't have access to a kiln, let me know. I can make another run and get some heat treated and if you come out I can trade heat treated for raw. Let me know. I'm in Sandy.

Jo try the same heat for 24 hrs
-
Can I reheat the same stone?
-
JoJo you can put it back in the kiln.
-
Awesome. I'll go fire it up here in a few.
-

That would be great thank you
-
Yes Sir. Looks dang near the same. I'll get on my PC and upload a photo I took.
-
Does anyone have any finished points made out of this stuff? I believe I have some but not 100% sure, had it given to me a time or two ago and just stumbled upon it again.
-
Here is one from Nevada wounder stone I made.
-
Kool, the stuff I have most definitely could almost be a possibility of being wonderstone....I will have to try and make something and post a picture. :P
-
Tom, is yours heat treated? I just did mine again last weekend. Not the greatest photo but it turned one band blue.
-
Went out and decided to finish the point I posted to start this thread. Here it is. This is heated to 680 for 12 hours.
