Hey everyone!
Been lurking here for a while. Some may recognize me from another forum, but it's good to be here talking more about wood and primitive bows!
This is one I've been messing with for a while. It was a set of billets from a southern gentlemen who requested to remain nameless.
Originally I though it would be a sinew backed recurve with static tips, but I spent so much time fighting with twist in the billets, that I finally had enough.
I did my best to chase a ring (or a few rings) and decided it would be a nice selfbow, in a pyramid, flatbow style.
The bow is short, 55" AMO, and draws just about 50# @26". Weighs just 13oz ... This is some low density yew but still seems very snappy. Currently has about 1.5" string follow at rest, but given the short limbs, low mass, and thin tips, I expect decent performance. More shooting will tell, only preliminary shots thus far.
Tiller looks pretty good, I think the outer third could use to bend a bit more on both limbs, but I don't think it's critical. Full draw to come momentarily.

Looks real nice.

Thanks for the kind words!
I have to say I'm hugely impressed with Yew in general! This stuff just loves to bend and works so nicely with hand tools.
I was blessed with a fantastic stave so I can't take all the credit Pat!
I'm looking forward to posting more of my work, but most importantly to improving my skills and techniques in selfbows and laminated bows with advice from everyone.
Next up ... Mulberry recurve which is in final stages of tillering and as hose who know me would guess, the usual steady flow of tri-lam bows.
Are tri-lam bows considered acceptable to post here? I'm not familiar with what the guidelines are about primitive/trad etc here on PA. Is it basically anything but 'glass' is good to go?

All natural materials (with little exceptions like glues, modern materials for tip overlays, piddly details like that) are accepted on the Bows Thread. If you think it is pushing that line a little, post it over in Around The Campfire. It's kinda arbitrary, but it does satisfy our urges to classify what is and what isn't "primitive".
We do not require you to throw away your glasses and prescription drugs, get nekkid, and build bows in the rain with chips of broken stones. And if you do........NO PICS NO VIDEO PLEASE!!!

Nice job, Ben. Good to see you over here, too. ;)

Welcome aboard Ben! Nice little yew bow. I saw you mentioned that you thought the outer thirds could bend a little more, and while I didnt notice you ask for any tiller advice...here it is ;) Tiller looks good, but if there is any room for improvement, it appears to me that getting the limbs bending more right out of the fades during tillering wood have given you a little smoother draw with less mid-limb set, given that you have that nice pyramid front profile.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
