Hi, Everyone
I finished this up about a month ago. It's a bamboo backed ipe. The fellow I made it for is very tall (6' 4"), with a long draw (29").
He wanted it 55 - 60# @ 29". It's 72" NTN, with handle riser in poplar. The second pic is of my most excellent wife, Linda, holding it at brace.

Some pics at brace, and full draw. Final result: 57# @ 29". 1 1/4" at handle, with continuous taper to 1/2" self nocks. Small pistol grip.

It finished up very nice, with only 1" of set after immediate unbrace.

Great job, its a good looking bow. Could we see a front profile picture. It does a lot of the bending in the inner limbs. Are the stiffer outer limbs a carryover from building lots of holmegaard bows or because it is so tall? ;) Justin

Hey, Justin
Sorry, I can't send a front profile pic. The bow is gone.
Yes, I do like to keep the tips stiff. I usually don't let the tips bend in longer bows (>68") for the last 6 - 8". Makes them fast. You can't get too carried away with this, otherwise hand shock is an issue.
This bow was a screamer. Cast was super. Longer bows are faster than shorter bows. Sir Issac Newton had that worked out long ago.
Ipe / bamboo is a great combo. You can make them narrow, and set is minimal.
-
Thanks for the info ABD. I like the stiff tips also, but I usually keep mine around 6". I often narrow the last 6" to a narrow parallel almost holmegaard style. Those look like they are 10-12" but maybe they aren't that long. I have a boo backed Ipe going also. Only 7/8" wide so I put in a little parallel limb. Justin

Looks like a "Furniture Bow" (superb woodcraft ;)) to me. Already boomarked for Feb Laminant Bow of the Month too.
-
I love it I am going to get started on one like it real soon. Did you glue in any reflex?

Really a nice job, tiller looks great also. i imagine your friend is going to have some fun with that one. Steve

really nice, smooth looking bow- ryan

WIBOWYER,
No, I didn't glue in any reflex. Started with a straight stave.
-

Real nice bow. I've seen some backed ipe bows even skinnier than that. They seem to make great shooters.
"Longer bows are faster than shorter bows." Not always.
Glad to hear you have an excellent wife. They're worth several good bows aren't they. Or at least two.
-
Very slender, nice curves.
No rudeness intended.

LOL!!! No offense taken, Mark!! Yes, they both have nice curves!! I still think my wife is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and I still remind her on occasion. I got a thing about those blonds/red heads... they just seem to stand out! Down side? They usually have a temperament to match!
Hey, Medicinewheel, check out the 5th pic... the bow took 1" of set. I started with a straight stave... no reflex.
-
very nice bows. I really like boo-ipe they make some FAST bows
-
I agree. I almost like it as much as osage. Almost. It really lends well to narrow profiles, and takes little set. It is a bit hard to work... tools have to be really sharp, or you get chatter. The dust also bothers me. Makes my skin itch, and makes me sick to my stomach, so I wear a respirator, especially when sanding.
-
That is a downfall of ipe. My bandsaw is in the house and that stuff will stink up a house fast. I also wear a respirator and put a fan in my shop window. I also wear long sleeves and throw my clothes right in the wash after cutting. Sanding has to be done out doors. Its worth it but I wouldnt want to work with it every day. Jesse

Adb3112... ;D It's hard not to love seeing this. Very nice work Adb, and you did a good tillering job considering the arc its drawing and just unbraced set it takes..
Thats Ipe for ya..the end result of a little stinky sawdust is a very fast, and sweet shooting bow.
Rich-after 50 bows you won't even notice it anymore :D

I totally agree with WIBOWYER. Ipe dust is nasty stuff. I just can't see it being good for you. To solve part of that problem, I purchased a portable dust filtration system. I have it mounted upside down under my main workbench. Keeps it out of the way. It has 2 speeds, and on high, it moves a LOT of air. Totally recircs the air in my shop every 2 minutes. Filters down to 5 microns particle size. Cost about $100. Doesn't totally solve the problem, but it helps a bunch.
It has a two part filter... a sponge large particle filter on the end, and a cone shaped paper filter inside, both of which can be replaced and cleaned. If I turn this thing on full blast, and wear my respirator, ipe is tolerable.
