I was trying to sit down late last night and hit some rocks. When i put weight on my chair with my hand the chair flipped over. This drove my hand into the this flint core i had left there. When i looked at the wound and saw the yellow fat tissue and blue veins I knew it was time for a trip to the ER. I contemplated sewing it up myself but the wife wanted me to go for the sake of infection. to keep from waking the babies we duck taped it and i was off to the doc. The doc knew about flintknapping and flytying and he gave me a togo bag full of the forceps and scissors they used. I thought that was pretty cool. Moral of the story clean up your shop. I plan to tuck my buckets of flint under my work benches so that the kids don't fall on them.

Well i wont be knapping for a couple weeks.
-
Youch!! Man that sucks! It'd take me a month to clean up out there, guess I better watch my step. And no barefoot kids ::). Godspeed on your recovery, I wanna see more of your work.
-
Ooof! Nice work! Good pictures!
-
Yuk, that looks unpleasant!
Further support for my theory that knapping on a upside down bucket or a log is good mojo though ::)
Hope that heals up quick for ya.
-
MAN that sure made me pucker. Nice one
-
Ouch, that's a good one. I stepped over my bucket and drove the copper end of my ishi stick into my calf last year. Had to get stitches like you and like your doctor he gave me the entire ER room kit to take with me.

That's a real bummer squatch! I bet it's sore.
Real flintknapper would get a flake to remove those sutures when it's time ;D
Good luck recovering and youll be knapping soon

^^ that is some quality stitch work though.
it should heal quickly.

Nathan, that looked mean, and yes do not put any pressure on that till it is healed. There's not much in knapping that you can do without putting pressure on that spot. I hate to see that this happened, but it could have been worse. I may clean my place up some more tonight or tomorrow.

I always say "if you ain't bleeding, you ain't knapping", but I think that may be pushing it some. :o
-
Yeah - been there - done that - nothing I have ever done needed stitches though. most recently I was cutting a knot of of some string and sliced my finger pretty good!
-
Thanks for the posts. I'll be alright :'(. Tracy the doc said I could use some obsidian to cut the stitches free. We'll at least I can still heat treat some. Y'all keep posting those points. It will give me something to look at.

Ouch!

Give it plenty of time to heal and wear a glove/ pad for more protection when you get back at it.

good thing it wasn't sharp!!! Would have cut your and off or at least got deep enough to get the artery. Thank God your wife was home, last time I cut my hand knapping I slipped while pressure flaking and cut the tendon and joint open where your index finger and hand join. To make it short I was a deer camp opening weekend the Friday before gun season started and was alone and had to drive myself 25 miles to the er while trying to stop the bleeding and calling the wife to inform her of my fun creative day, Glad you will be alright and keep posting the points I enjoy looking and it gives me ideas.

Haha ;D yep I need to stop whining. I was back at it yesterday after mowing the yard. I was practicing up on isolating platforms, and was getting one pretty thin till I hit it on the base. :'(
No pressure flaking yet.
Bob I agree we to need to post something like that ate the classic.
Thanks for the thoughts everybody! But Towers right

Duct tape and toilet paper....it's called a Mandaid!
I hope you heal well and don't have any issues with nerve or tendon damage. The knapping spirits have exacted their toll, let's hope they are merciful and give you good flaking from here out!
