I got this piece of mesquite from Cipriano. It was a bit snaked and lumpy but easy to steam mostly strait. It still has a some minor bumps in one limb but is pretty clean. This is the first bow I have made from mesquite and the wood makes a good bow, but the best quality is the beautiful color. The bow is replicated from a page in "Bows ,arrows and quivers of the american frontier". The bow is 42" long and draws 70# @ 20"(That's why the full draw picture is a little blurry. I don't usually shoot 70# short bows.) The arrows pictured with this bow were 28" with 8" foreshafts, so it seems it would have been drawn 20". It has a 3 layer sinew backing and sinew wrapped handle painted with ocher. The string is 2 ply sinew. It took a few tries to try and copy the knot. It looks pretty close and does the trick.

Gee whiz- no wonder the Apache were such fearsome warrior's carrying weapons like that! :-)

A great Replica and a beauty to look at!
-
Very nice Chuck ! Bob
-
Woo.. 70# at 20" :o
I have a dumb ass Brit question about drawing short...
How do you avoid your hand recoiling back and smacking you in the mouth as you loose? :-[
I demo'd a short bow at a have-a-go, shooting a whistling arrow... gave myself a fat lip :o
Mind the audience like it ::)

Fantastic work.
-
That is really nice.
Did you leave some sap wood?
-
Very nicely done sir.....believe you are correct on draw, it's my understanding that NA consider the foreshaft as part of the head so they "draw to the head". You already knew that I'm sure.......anyway another superior piece of work sir.

Very good looking Gull-Wing bow! I didn't know Mesquite was good bow wood.

That's awesome, Chuck. That bow is a beast!

Very nicely done Chuck! I really enjoy your replicas. Josh

Which type of mesquite is it, and is it all heartwood?
-
Very cool, very very cool
-
very nice, I love that bow,, B

Amazing looking bow!
-
I love this bow! I've been thinking about mesquite as a bow wood for a bit, but those spines, and my clumsiness have turned me off. looks like it worked out great!
-
Thanks everyone. Yes the bow has both sap and heartwood. I'm not sure what kind of mesquite it is. Dell, I shoot a lot of shortbows and have learned not to punch myself in the face ;)

Nice one chuck!!
-
Chuck, if Cippy cut it close to home its more than likely honey mesquite. I used to cut mine not far from there. Josh

Very nice job man. Love your work.
-
Wow that would be a real buffalo killer.
Did the Apache make make 70# bows?
-
Great bow again! Like the profiles.
I really enjoy your work.
-
Thanks. Brokenarrow, This bow is a bit thicker than the one I copied. We would have to look closer at all Apache bows. Most I have seen look to be 40-50# IMHO
-
Very nicely made, lovely profile.
-
Stunning bow Chuck, looks like a fun and challenging bow to shoot
-
VERY NICE! Well done man!
-
Chuck, is the setback bow or gull wing a better design than if this bow was reflexed and/or recurved?
Shortbows rule!
-
Fantastic bow. Awesome. Apache double curve. :-)
