I was wondering : we toast bellies to improve its integrity. Could lightly toasting a weak chute shaft (such as rose) safely make it denser and there for spine heavier ?

I heat treat all hardwood shoots I make into arrows. After straightening I start at one end and heat the shaft while rotating it until it turns brown. I work out the shaft to the other end. Be careful of the steam that could be forced out the far end. Once tempered lay it flat and let it cool slowly. If you notice any crooks that may reappear go ahead and straighten it while hot.

How much does that affect spine?

It stiffens the shafts to temper them but I only check spine to find the stiff side of the shaft on cane and shoot shafts which goes against the bow.
