Title: Elm Hall bow
Post by: missilemaster on April 01, 2015, 08:47:11 pm
Here is one I finished a bit ago. Its from some elm I and the "northern boys" got at The Elm Hall shoot.  She's a real sweet shooter.  65" of heat tempered elm, 47# at 27" maybe a fizz more. Tips are some super hard wood I got from Paul, thanks buddy! I heated about 5 or so inches into it and it kept most of it. It had a big time sideways kick that also took a bit of heating to get out. The bottom limb has a touch more reflex than the top. Finish is brown over green RIT dye mixed with acetone, then highlighted with 400 grit sandpaper, 10 or so coats of helsmans spar satin and wax over top the works. I was trying to go for the look Greg does on his bows but ended up with tree bark instead! ::) I have 4 more pieces from the same tree and cant wait to dig into it! The next one will be a D/R!

Top limb looks shorter in the photo but I think I am tilting it slightly.

I was amazed at how much reflex it kept Bill.  I rarely work with elm.

Sorry Cody. After seeing so many of your bows in person and never seeing even the smallest microscopic blemish in any of them Paul and I were in shock to find this tiny dent. ;D :o
and yes Paul that is your finger!

Very nice bow, Cody. And thank you for the dent! Goes a long ways in supporting the "Cody is still mortal" stance.  ::)

Glad this one was brought back up.  That looks like a very nice piece of Elm, turned into a fine bow, the Wright way!  :)

Elm surprised me with how much reflex it holds and the not very high density really helps.
Great looking bow with spot on tiller.  :)
The only downside to elm is the way it still looks scratched on the fade leading into the handle. The stain always picks them out! No matter how much you sand it those tiny scratches are very hard to get rid off and then you start eating the earlywood....
Great bow though.
