What is a good cheap material to stick on the shelf thats not animal fur. Some thing to buy local from thrift shop or where ever...?
-
i don't use a shelf but i would think felt fabric would work, find it at any fabric store for a reasonable price i imagine

I have lots of leather scrap, I'm talking about the furry - fuzzy rest material.

Bingo! I use a 1/2" dot of it for the strike plate and cover the shelf with it, then trim to fit.

........self adhering Velcro" got it

If you stick the other half to a bent stick it makes a good back scratcher ;D

I've been shooting off the wood for 23 years. If your arrow matchs the bow. Your useing your natural form. Your draw and release is smooth.
All you here is the arrow being drawed (maybe). I've shot 40 bucks most like this all under 17,18 yards. Not a one has heard the arrow being drawed and sppoked.
A covered shelk just makes your bow father from center. If that dos'nt matter to you go for it put one on.

Couple thoughts....
Make sure your shelf is radiused, this reduces the contact area for your arrow.
Some arrow materials make more noise than others. Cane tends to make more noise for me than wood.

I just love seal skin but you said not furry... felt would wear too quickly..cordovan leather is real slick and thats what you want...havent tried the velcro..sounds like it might work...gut

Velcro works great...

I hear ya about making shelf radius, when I shoot a bow in I can see the color/scrape it leaves against the bow it gives me a clue where to tweak the shelf/rest. :) As long as the nock point and arrow spine is good and where the arrows are going all else should come into play.

I am currently cutting up and using old guitar picks on both the rest (if I use one other than my hand), and the face of the bow. Believe it or not if the arrow is tuned to the bow, there is no sound with the arrow passing and the material never seems to wear out, is weather resistant and can be made to look any way you want it. I am not sure how this fits the definition of primitive but in my household this is as primitive as it gets.

Moleskin, like for your feet. You can get camo moleskin.
Or velcro.
I glue on suede sometimes.
