Here is a bow I finished up last night. I traded John Strunk for nice piece of osage that was wide, thin, flat and about 60" long with nice growth. I knew exactly what bow I wanted to make from it. I opened up Alleley and Hamm to the Osage Indians section and studied the simple pyramid bow that Saxton Pope supposedly test shot and was impressed with. I made the bow to the specs except that the version I made was elongated compared to the original.
The bow came in at 60 # at 26" draw and it was a real arrow launcher. However, I needed to make the bow for a person who needed a lighter bow. I brought it down in width and thickness until it hit 42# at 27".
Tip to tip the bow is 58.5" ntn is 57.5"
about 1" wide through handle, and 2" wide at widest. (it was 2 3/8" before the weight loss)
The pin nocks are 1/4" wide.
Beeswax finish and braintan deer thong handle wrapped. Between the beeswax and the smokey braintan this is the best smelling bow I have ever made ;D

Came out nice carson, i love the look of a a simple pyramid bow
-
Super cool bow. That's a beautiful bend! Nice finish work too.
-
Very nice! What a great bend that baby has.
-
Very nicely done Carson
-
Nice. Simple. Elegant. Well done.
-
Love the simple beautiful lines, and what a great bend.
-
Thanks guys!! I really enjoyed building this one. I definitely like this design, especially at the higher draw weight. This pyramid build has me thinking about Del's experiment with the plexiglas pyramids...have to revisit that.
-
Sweet looking piece of Sage. Like the simplicity in this one. Very nice.
-
Really cool bow. I really want to make one of those. Yours looks exactly like the illustration in the book. Nice work
-
Sweet simple bow. That tiller is perfect! 8)
-
That's a fine looking bow Carson. Good job with the beeswax finish. It looks great.
-
Good job, nice replica. I've studied that drawing about a dozen times and could only imagine what type of missile launcher it must have been. Thanks for showing us.
-
Looks good. :D
-
good looking bow and beautiful tiller
-
Looks really fantastic! Well done!
-
I like this bow a lot.
-
Great looking bow! I'm adding that design to my "to do" list.
-
I guess it's ok >:D....
-
That's really cool.
I think it's the first one I've seen in that style, simple and clean which is what a bow should be (IMO)
It looks right and when it looks right it generally is right :)

Very nice, beautiful bow and a very nice looking piece of Osage. :)

Nice bow Carson, beauty bend
-
Very nice Carson, that looks like one super clean piece of osage and you got it bending to a nice arc. Like the looks of the handle and finish, fits the bow nicely.
-
Awesome bow mister. Real beauty. Think I will make a similar one. :)
-
Looks perfect.
-
Thanks guys!
Hrothgar, yeah that bow in particular really jumped off the page and demanded to be built. I feel like this isn't really a replica though as it sits about 10 inches longer. It was a good intro into the design for me.
Pappy and Greg, this was a an exceptionally clean piece of osage. I had to heat out a little propeller twist and a some side bend. I got a little careless when heating out the side bend through the handle and ended up with crispy wood throughout the handle area. Bow was only roughed out, but I had to chase another ring to get through the crusty ring on the back. I was worried about making weight after that, only to find the sucker coming in at 60#! Amazing what osage can do.
I don't know why i was surprised at how hard this bow shoots. It is basically the design Tim Baker settled in on for his fast bows from boards.
Thanks Del, I am leaning towards simple and clean more and more lately.
-
As soon as i saw this i knew this would be the basis of my next build...i love your bow and the tiller is looks perfect to me. Bookmarked :)
-
Man.... great job brotha !!!!
-
Very nice work, the drawweight isn't mine, but for the rest, the bow looks super clean and the tiller is spot on!
very good work!
-
Dainty little bow Carson, looks peachy :)
-
That is a nice looking bow Carson, I really like it.
It looks a lot like a bow I helped Paul (EhkAhk from the old board) to make about 10 years ago
-
Thanks guys.
Looks pretty similar Marc!
Adam, I like my bows a little heavier too. I really liked this bow when before I had to bring the weight down...The funny thing Cody, is that it looked every bit as dainty when it pulled 60#! Here is a picture of it before the weight-loss. And a video of it bending before I reluctantly brought the weight down.
This is a video, if you click on it:

Not that anybody asked ;D, but I found that waxing the handle and the inside of the leather thong wrap is a good way to get that leather to stay put without having to get out the superglue.
-
Came out nice carson, i love the look of a a simple pyramid bow
Agreed. GOOD WORK!
-
Nice work Carson that came out good. I have copied that bow from the Hamm and Alley book many times. My favorite design to build.
-
Now that is a trie pyramid shorty. Really nice Carson. You nailed that one. I like it.
-
Thanks Arrowind
Thanks JonW, your bows came to mind while working on this one. I can see why it is your favorite design.
Thanks Sidewinder!
