Title: Fletching Size
Post by: bow101 on March 16, 2015, 03:58:44 pm
Do you have any preference when it comes to feather length.?  I'm using 4"............ does longer fletching have any significance besides causing more drag.

I use 4 inch because I can sometimes get two fletches from one feather that way, and I am cheap.---er-----frugal---er---thrifty--something.  Probably just cheap.

Ideally you want to use the least amount of fletching and still get good arrow flight. If you are mostly target shooting small fletching should be fine. If you hunt, larger fletching is usually used to help stabilize an arrow with a broadhead.
I use 5 1/2" fletching that I burn myself but they are similar to high backed shields. At 15 to 20 yards(hunting) it really doesn't matter as long as you get good arrow flight.

I make mine a touch higher To compensate  for the shorter length.

I use 4", 5" & 5.5". I cant really tell a difference if the bow and arrows are in harmony. Thinking about whipping up 2 or 3 arrows with 2.5" fletching to see what they do in the wind with broad heads. If you get Trad Bowhunter Mag, Dennis Kamstra did a small write up on it in his usual tips article. Pretty cool.

I use either 5" or 4". I like shield cut for looks. I will also  take 5" parabolic and cut 3/4" off the back to give it as better look.

My son uses 2" plastic feathers out of his 70# compound and his arrows fly like darts.  Back in the late 50's and early 60's my dad shot 6 fletch arrows using 2" feathers while target shooting.
