For those of you that can make a Clovis, what method and or jig are you using?
I have tried a couple by striking the prepared tip with a bopper and have had poor results, so I want to try something new. Would like to see some pictures of your results and methods.
Thanks

I do what you've been doing or use In-direct percussion after I prepare the nipple.

Nc, I have fooled around a little bit with both a guillotine and a solberg type jigs, I need to do alot more playing. I have had mixed results, mainly no consistency. No photo of jig but here's a couple of points. Bob Opps first photo doesn't have a flute :(

Nice flutes, Bob. Both sides?
-
Eddie, ya both sides see If I can find pic of the other side or maybe still got both points around for another pic. They all got a A&B ;D The last one is a pc of Georgetown and probably my best fluted attempt to date. You need tons of material and your preforms need to be dead on for good results, Hey a little luck doesn't hurt either. :o :o Bob

Thanks guys, those look good to me.
I am going to make a jig, I think that's the way to go.

I use direct percussion, the nipple set up is the key. also i don't finish the tip until the flutes are struck. I wrap the point in my soft leather I use for pressure flaking, hold it tight against my leg and strike the nipple. It takes more than a few times to get comfortable hitting it hard enough. After it's fluted I finish the tip and done.

I do my flutes like bonepile. I use jean legs for pressure and flutes.
Try using some good Edwards or Georgetown. Mid west cherts flute well also.
Just my opinion--- True Clovis points have hinge fractures, Folsoms have long
thinning flakes like ones produced with jigs. Sure there are Clovis with out hinged
flutes but I think they were always attempting to hinge out.
With percussion make sure your nipple is in line with a center ridge on the biface.
Start with smaller Clovis and work up to Six inchers. lol

I built a Solberger not too long ago and am still experimenting when I have a chance. Those turned out nice.
