Thought I'd make a short, rigid handled board bow cause I seen all the " boards are OK for second choices and mediocre performers so here's what I made up.
Polk Salad Annie (mean, vicious, straight-razor totin woman)
51" grey elm, rigid handle, mollegabet style, and 25" of working limb, standing grain, self bow
64# @ 21" , about 1/4" of limb set
Performance, not mediocre
The pics are of her in the white so ya can see it's a self bow, no patches, backing, heat treating etc. The full draw is indoors (my wife refuses to go out when it's 24 below zero)
enjoy the pics, there are quite a few pics with rulers in ,em but if you want/need any dimensions say so and I'll put the mic to her.

Daiiiing them pins is thin!
-
Cool little stick flinger Rich. Is it the bow or you with the bad attitude? ;) I agree with your wife.
-
AJ, they are indeed, but they are 1/2 inch deep
Jon W, got to be the bow cause I aint that tall >:D It was cold enough that I did not want to test the whole thing about wood bows in the cold, I sure wont ever be huntin in that much cold. 8)

Ok I'm starting to believe you guys are wizards or something now. You work absolute magic with wood! Awesome! :D
-
Good looking Molle Halfeye, good to see you back to making bows!
-
bad attitude... but pretty :-* ;)
Del
-
Thanks you guys. Hope to do her justice with the finish, I'm into the whole neolithic look now so maybe some dark plant stain and some black line cave art.
sieddy, no magic just slow hand tillering
Dell, the prettiest bow I own is a little yew item from across the pond 8)

nice one, I like the short girls best, as long as they are well proportioned like this one.
I agree with how you slightly with-tapered the bending parts.
I've been wondering wether the taper should be like in a pyramid bow or less.
-
Rich,
Nice work at every angle...Awesome unstrung profile for that much working limb at that weight! :o I can tell that's a quick one... 8) I'll be sure to check back in for the paint...
Don
-
Great little spitfire! Impressive bend on that girl.
-
Sweet! That is impressive to have that little set on a bow that short.
I don't have the skills to make one like that, but you've got me interested in grey elm. :)
-
Rich I knew all along that your phenomenal bows are the result of patient craftsmanship. That's what makes em so inspiring!
Also as a Brit myself I'm proud to hear that you've got an English Yew bow. (Del's a great ambassador!) :D
-
I saw the title of this thread (51" of bad attitude), and I saw you started this thread, half eye. I was thinking that man sure is taller than 51". :)
That's a might fine bow. You turn out some beauties.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments fellas.
Jodocus, the limbs (from grip fade to lever fade) are 2.0" wide to 1-9/16"wide and .498" thick to .380" thick and the levers are 1/2" thick.
Don, Slimbob, thanks you fellas
GB, both the red (slippery) elm and the grey (american) elm make very nice bows....either stave or board
sieddy, Mr. Cat makes a very fine bow, I'm trying hard to arrange for it to kill an elk, hopefully this year
George, I hear what you and Jon are saying. I'm not to good at all the science stuff so I try to let the bows speak for themselves and I do believe that boards can make good bows. wood is wood to me. Thank you for your comment.

Damn fine bow Rich, as usual! I gotta say, I just love it when you make one for the board haters. >:D Nothin "mediocre" about that one!!!
Tattoo Dave

That is a little rocket launcher right there! I ain't thought about that song in years! Gator got her granny... ;D That's good stuff Rich.
-
Thanks dave, appreciate it
Howard, ya know your opinion means a lot, bud. Used that song when I was out in the cruiser.

I think it might be showing our age. Anyway, I have no doubt that we have seen our share of mean, straight razor totin' women. Lord, help us! That grey elm is some fine bow wood. That one ought to make a deer killer for sure.
-
Rich, then, that bow is speaking volumes.
You always do well.
No matter the design. No matter the bow wood. No matter the science.
It is the bowyer that makes all of the above work.

Nice little bow Rich, thanks for the close-ups.
-
Like I said thank you for the earlier comment, your outlook and experience is always welcome, sir.
Hrothgar, you are welcome. I'm not advocating excessively short bows, just trying to show that boards will take a lot of gaff, and if used with standard design perameters should make bows as nice as any.

Nice little "shorty", Rich, I've been on that short bow kick myself. But down here in the South, we call it "Poke Salad".
-
has a mean look to it Rich, in a good way that is. Have to try me a mollie one day, the more of them I see posted the more they start to appeal to me.
-
Yes sir, but thought it should be spelled like the song title cause you fellas dont miss nothin ::) If ya can see that thermo in the pic I'm still aint gonna wear no shorts and flops bud >:D >:D >:D
B2, made quite a few and they are good performers and have real good cast, but to be honest I still like my little neolithic bendies, thanks man

LOL ;)

See Rich, your lowering the bar so to speak. You just keep showing that you can make em shorter and a Molly with that little working limb with that little set is a hit. Thanks for sharing it. Now don't go and mess up the finish ;). Danny
-
Nice Molly Rich..... :) ;)
DBar
-
Danny, thank you, I will try to get it right, or at least what my vision was.
D Bar, Thanks man
rich
-
Sweet short mollie, Rich!! Nice job!! ;)
-
Cool bow, I'd like to try a short mollie
-
Rich how/where in the world did you dig up a grey elm board?
-
Thank you Ken.
After seeing your bows Wiz, a mollegabet should be real easy for you to build
Pearl Drums, I cut and mill my own boards same time as I'm gettin staves. If there is less than perfect outter areas on a tree, it goes to full quartersawn (standing grain) boards. Larry owns the mill so he gets most and I get what ever I need. We cut hard maple, slippery elm, grey elm, yellow and white birch, white and black ash some walnut to name a few.

Sweet little shooter Rich !!!
-
Rich,
Give us some kind of hint of the Neolithic art work/pattern...The anticipation is killing me...I will be checking back Sir...
Don
-
Thank you Coaster
Don, I was thinking of some of those line drawings that look like various critters and the man figures hunting them....some such as that probably only red ochre and black on a dark smoky brown background....maybe a thin bark snake or critter to boot. Still cogitating.

Didja ever get this one dolled up Rich???
OneBow
-
No sir I did not.....I decided it was more bow than I could shoot regular so I sent it on down to Mr. Burchett. He slapped some sinew on her and yanked it on back....he did post it up and man what a bow. I dont remember all the particulars but I think it was more than half length in draw and in the high 60"s or such......it's shootin just fine far as I know
rich

Onebow, here's the link http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,52218.0.html All I did was put some sinew on the back and pulled it back...Rich had the tillering spot on from the get go, so no adjustments needed 8) This is a rocket launcher man, it screams an arrow, hard to track it's flight at 15 yds... :o
