Title: Curly osage bow finished
Post by: osage outlaw on February 05, 2015, 01:03:43 pm
Its finished all right  :'(   I started this bow at last years Tennessee Classic.  The bow felt wet and spongy when I got it bending.  It was also very heavy and still had a lot of thickness.  Looking at the dimensions of it you would think it was a 70 lb bow but it was only 40-45 lbs.  I brought it home and put it in my hot box for a while.  I added some reflex to it and then put it aside until today.  I strung it up and checked the weight on my scale, 45@20".  But as I was checking the weight I heard a tic.  I pulled it back a little by hand and heard more than just a tic.  I shut my eyes and yanked it back to full draw.  There was a bang and the lower limb hit me in the chest.  This is the first bow that I've broke.  Oh well.  I didn't have much confidence in this bow anyway.  I think the curly grain is junk for making self bows.  Its a shame.  It would have looked amazing sanded smooth and a glossy finish put on it.

Is that a tension failure? I always wonder when I try to tell the difference between compression and tension failures

It could still make a good bow rack...but it doesn't look like it had any plans to be a bow.

I'm pretty sure it is a tension failure Chadwick.

It's going to be turned into knife handles Timbo.

It would have looked nice under clear glass... and survived.

That curly grain would have looked sharp. Good clean break (whatever that may mean :) ).

You just need to slow down, you can rush curly osage and expect a bow from it. Did you rub its belly every day for a few minutes prior to working it? It helps.

That was definitely a tension failure. Too bad, Clint.  :(

I've been told that if you take it to bed and whisper to it in the dark that they tend to stiffen up. >:D

That sucks clint. It was a pretty piece too. Even more surprised that it broke at 15 in. I assume that is "all the way back" for your t Rex arms. ::)

Yup, I'd call that a tension failure. The picture where you put the pieces back together shows it. It failed in tension, then radiated down the limbs in both directions, leaving the little peak in the belly piece right under the failure.

Go ahead Bill.  I don't think I could have done anything to make this bow a shooter.

Man, too bad on that one Clint. Good thing you did'nt impale yourself with it. Now ifn that had been southern kansas osage it prolly would held together... >:D

I was going to say...but... it would have made a beautiful gun stock...   got ya buddy, I know, you did the best possible, I have no doubt about it.  it was just a bastard of a piece of osage for a bow.  Good for you, for giving it a try.  I bet curly osage is very rare.  If you have a piece big enough to make a gun stock out of someone's bound to want it. I can just imagine it finished with a little age on it.  Hell, if I was still making muzzle loaders I would trade you big time for it, I can see a beautiful Hawkins stock out of it.

All my osage bows that break from now-on are going to be classified as curly-grained.

It broke at full draw DVS.  That's about 24" for my T-rex arms  ;)

I know from making flintlocks that curly wood is a mixture of wood as hard as a brick and wood that is very soft and weak.

Save your broken bow for tip overlays and handles, curly osage makes spectacular overlays.

Hi OO, Just curious to what the dimensions (width and length) were? I have seen some curly wood bows survive, and others that break in tension or chrysal.

I can get the exact measurements later today.  I know I made it wider than I normally do for osage.

I'm not going to bother trying to bend any more of it Pappy.  I just think its not worth messing with as a selfbow.

It was 63.5" long, 1.5" wide to mid limb, and just about 1/2" thick where it broke.

I knew you were starting to have your doubts about it at the Classic.  Sure was pretty wood.

That is weird.  I would have though that a well established ring on the back would have prevented that, despite the grain.  It wiggles but mostly forrlows the general grain perfectly, from what I can see.

I have some BL like that and now I'm slightly intimidated, although the wood feels solid as a rock and heavy.
