Title: "The Slayer of Smawg"
Post by: SteveT. on January 03, 2015, 05:22:42 pm
Hurry ,run, the dragon is coming! He's fire breathing and will kill us all! Hide everyone, protect yourselves from his fury!
"Look, it's the mighty bowman. He'll kill the dragon with his mighty bow. See, he's getting ready now!"
"Do not fear! I have my dragon slaying bow complete with dragon's teeth and sheathed in dragon scales. I shall shoot it in the heart with this special arrow head forged from the breath of a fire-breathing dragon. "

" Do not worry dear citizens. I have another arrow. This one is even bigger!"
" He did it! Praise to the dragon slayer! He saved us from a firey doom!"

Yeah, I mean that's a lot of dead weight isn't it? What's up there?

Happy New year everyone. Just being silly on a Saturday afternoon. We saw the latest Hobbit movie and it inspired me to make something for pure fantasy and not really function. Too much time on my hands I guess. If the arrows did not work I could always pierce it in the heart with those big teeth.

Just a little closer look at the limb and grip. The art work is supposed to look like scales. Artistic license I suppose.

Last one of an unbraced profile. Hope you enjoyed it.

Just a little info on the bow itself if interested. It is 72" long and is laminated bamboo core with bamboo back and belly. Teeth are basswood spliced on and then shaped. Leather grip and rattan arrowpass. I used acrylic paints for the artwork and the clear coat over top.

oh ok, that makes more sense, being basswood and just for fancy that is...

Would not call it a recurve.   It behaves like a holmegaard bow if anything with the glue on tips.  I agree the mid-limbs are  stressed out.

Yeah its kind of a different bow. I like to see people excercise their creative juices. What ever blows your hair back right? Good job friend. Danny

Very unique, I love the paint job.  I did not get drawn for a dragon tag this year. >:D

Ahem.... It's "Smaug" not Smawg ;)

Cool looking bow - very different!

I do realize that I did not spell the name correctly for Smaug the dragon. I thought perhaps there might be issues with copyright, so I altered the name slightly. Thanks for all the kind words, and for having some fun along with me. Off now for more adventures in the frozen north.

I think you did an amazing job on that all around. Wonderful profile and artwork is amazing. I could be wrong but I think your tiller is spot on for your unbraced profile.  As for having fun, who doesnt enjoy being just a little goofy?

Love it, the hobbit rules, and you've done a great job with the lines on that bow, as well as the paint job!  I think that big X bow was what they fired at the dragon though right?  (I haven't seen the new one no spoilers!)  Now I'd like to see someone build one of those! Great work man

Thanks again for all your compliments and encouragement. I do enjoy a challenge, and making bows and arrows is a great way for me to express the creative side, which so many of you here on this site seem to have too. Now that I'm retired I have more time to bring to life some of the ideas I used to only dream about. Life is great !
