Title: Christmas bows
Post by: Loope on December 25, 2014, 12:28:57 am
I made four bows this year.  All hickory board pyramids using bubby's method.  Left to right:  20# @ 24", 22# @ 25", 38# @ 26" and 45# @ 28".  Two nieces, nephew, and brother.  Colored with transtint water-based dye and finished with tru-oil.  Blue and purple for the girls, Green/black and grey/black for the boys.

A couple more pis of the grey bow.  This one was my favorite.  Short nocks and I love the color, grey with black tips.

Those look sharp! What did you use to stain 'em? I can see a lot of fun in store for tomorrow!

Thanks guys.  It was a lot of work, but will be worth it.  The family is getting together this afternoon and I can't wait to see their faces!

red hill, I used aniline powder water-based dye for the color.  The blue is just straight color.  I made the purple bow by first putting blue dye on the bow and then adding red dye on top of that.  I debated mixing blue and red together in one jar, but doing two separate applications gives an interesting variation in the shade of purple over the bow.  For the green, I first dyed the tips black, followed by dark green dye.  The grey bow used only black dye, applied very heavy in multiple coats for the tips, and then lightly for the rest of the bow.  I got the grey I wanted by rubbing in a small amount of dye, then using a clean wet cloth to rub out some color.

It was a lot of fun, but worth a lot of smiles!

Pretty!  I love the gray-brown one.

BTW, I have been reading his posts, but where does one go to read up on the "Bubby method"?

It's here on the PA forum, original post by bubby, "An easy board bow build"  http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php?topic=35312.0

Hope the link works, and thanks to bubby for the build-along!
