Here is an interesting little bow, at least for me – haha. This bow is made with akinda prefab sinew backing, will say the backing is applied in one single piece. The backing of that bow was first on this bow: http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,36287.0.html
Here the sinew was applied conventional. It was thrown off with a loud bang while drawing obviously because of poor preparation at the back. I saved the backing strip and had it laying around for years. This year in August I thought give it a try again on a fresh roughed out plains type. The dried out strip was soaked in water for one day, the bows back carefully prepped, the strip applied in one whole layer, and …. it came out great!
I'm really thinking we should do more experiments in that technique, I read somewhere Koreans do it in a similar way.
Well back to the bow. The sinew backing is quite strong proportional (⅓ to ⅔) to the wood thickness, which is perhaps the reason for the cracks on the belly, they appeared while sinew curing. Tillering this bow out was easy and done in minutes, as the osage stick was near dimensions before I got it backed. The belly cracks were filled with thin super glue – excellent stuff! <the tips are secured with additional sinew wrappings, painted with red ochre. Forgot to say the sinew backing is all over the limb's sides. The sinew had become nearly transparent, when the light comes from the right angle you can see the wood of the back shining through. Hard to make suitable pics.
The handle is red and black flannel, held in place with a linen thread. The zigzag on the back is painted with earth pigments and particularly sanded off after drying. I like the 'used' look, hope the fresh appearance of the cloth will assimilate soon.
I found a nice bow in that manner in Baldwin's book, but I will not call mine a replica of this specimen. My bow has short static recurves, I haven’t seen that sharp on originals. These short statics causes a smooth draw out to 24”, maybe there is a tic more available.
This bow has a reflex of 5¾”, immediately after unbracing it is 5¼”, coming back in a few minutes. I'm very pleased with that.
I like this bow very much, it has lot of early drawweight and is a really snappy little devil.
Ah, forgot to say the thing is 41" ntn
Enjoy ….

I really really like this one. Your one of my favorite bowyers on this site, this bow is one of the many reasons why. Id say "keep em coming", but I really don't need to!
-
Man, sinew over osage is usually over kill and dead weight in my experience. But, you definitely have it doing its fair share on this one. Killer looking little bow.

what he said . . . .

Another stunner Simon!
-
Looks like a real crackerjack of a little bow.I like everything about it.Did i miss the draw weight?
There does seem to be a bit of confusion regarding definitions these days. That bow seems to be a straight reflex recurve bow,not a 5 curve as ive known the style to be.The 5 curve as ive been led to believe,is reflexed from the grip area and then deflexed in the region of midlimb and then reflexed at the outer extremities. In other words,a gullwing with reflex in the nock area.
Regardless an outstanding little bow.

You've got incredible talent.................

Outstanding. 52 pounds at 24 as in the title?
-
Wow, that is the most terrifying 41 inches of osage I have seen! :o I would say it was cute, but man, 52#?! Super impressive.
-
Simson,
Remind me when you put this one up for BOM .... O:)
DBar
-
That is just awesome! Great job!
I had a bow throw violently off some sinew too.
Some say sinew is magic.
I say runny superglue is magic! :)

Another work of art from you Simon. Really enjoy seeing your bows.
-
I'd like to see this bow shoot a flight arrow.
-
Once again Simon, you have outdone yourself. Simply amazing
-
very nice, I want to make one like that ! :)
-
Now that is a short bow by anyones standards, wow, 41 inches and drawing to 24 and looking deadly too.
Nicely done Simon. I like that 'aged' finish look your doing on your bows too.
-
Yup, just awesome.
-
Very nice bow, with a kind of rural look that I like. My only question: why is the upper limb that short in comparison to the lower one?

Thanks for your comment Traxx
drawweight: as title says 52/24
5curve: definition is to be made looking at the braced and drawn profile, right? This little sucker has a curve in the handle, not excessive o. k., but is has. Most of it is hidden by the fluffy handle cloth, I should have taken a pic before applying the clothes.

Yeah Jawge, me too
I'd like to see this bow shoot a flight arrow.
I thought on this Pat. perhaps I find the time to make a matching flight arrow. Flight shooting is anew thing for me and I'm interested.
Thanks fellas! And the next plains is in production ... Cheyenne inspired, we will see soon.

Both limbs have exact same length. Looking at the pics again I noticed I have my bowhand too high on the grip. Maybe this is irritating
-
a great looking bow as always!
-
Killer lil shorty :D
-
I like all your bows Simon, this one is near the top for me.
-
Love it Simon. My style for sure 8)
-
Damn Simon. Great job. That's some crazy draw length out of that shorty. Well done :)
-
I have enjoyed seeing every bow you've created. This one is top of the line, Beautiful work Simon!
-

In my experience, the definition is made at the unbraced profile. :)
-
fantastic, simply fantastic, Hans
-
Fantastic! How many layers of sinew?
-
This is the length of bow I would ultimately like to build for my own hunting--whitetails and hogs at no more than 15 yards from a ground or low tree blind. Just beautiful!

Incredible work!
-
you like little bow?
-
Yup, another great bow. Perfect tiller.
52# ;D I'd love to have that bow at a have-a-go day and hand it to some target archer who thinks 40# is heavy and he knows-it-all and watch in try to draw it >:D
