It started as a 1 1/2 wide American Elm sapling....1 1/4" wide at the handle, 1/2" nocks w/ small Cherokee style nocks, and slightly flipped tips, I added a couple of inches of reflex and it's settled in with no string follow, 64" ntn, 55# @ 25" I still need to take some weight off the tips (a little hand shock ) and do all the fine finish work but it shoots nice. Just wanted to share and get some critiques. Thanks

Hey Thunder. Good to see you post one, and it's good'n! Love your Elm bows.

Looks great!elm is some good stuff! 8)

That's a stout little elm stick. Nice tiller too. Thanks for sharing.
-
Thanks guys,
I just like the way D bows look.
-
Me too :)
-
I like that bow allot. What type elm is it? Did you notice any dark purple color heartwood when cutting it?
-
Hey Sleek,
From what I can tell, it's American Elm. There's no color to the heart wood. Here's a pic of the belly that I have handy.(http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh500/thundersdad/Elm%20D%20Bow/20141201_180616_zps3sdhdxmf.jpg) (http://s1248.photobucket.com/user/thundersdad/media/Elm%20D%20Bow/20141201_180616_zps3sdhdxmf.jpg.html)

I didn't mention it in the first post but the 2nd pic is the handle area...you can see my center and arrow pass pencil marks.

Nice work thunder, looks like a lightning shooter
-
Drewster,
If I can find some photos of it, I'll post some pics of an Elm shorty you might like.
-
Very nice bow. Well done
-
extremely simplistic; extremely effective (i've shot this bow a few times).
i was a little apprehensive at first to take it to my full 26" draw, but when i did, it was very rewarding.
excellent work :)

Very nice elm stick bow, nicely done. I the simple primitive look of it and you got a sweet looking bend on that baby, has the smooth look of an english long bow at full draw.
-
nice bow sir i like it
-
Nice work thunder. The tiller looks spot on. Way to go
-
Nailed it!
-
Sweet! Nice bend for sure!
-
Thanks guys,
I just like the way D bows look.

Very cool... great tiller, looks a bit like one of my ELBs. I'm sure a medieval Englishman would be happy with that, once he'd got over the shock of the different style nocks! ;D

I do like that!
-
Very nice! I have some red elm staves I cut about two weeks ago and I can't wait to start on one.
-
Beautiful bow Gilbert!! Love that elm stuff do ya ?? Expecting a couple of osage bows from you here on PA soon!
-
Thunder,
Don't know how I missed this post...but you have that D dialed in man, nice sapling bow for sure 8)
Don
-
Very cool, beautiful tiller
-
Bad ASS, Thunder. I work elm saplings more than anything else and you did fine work there for such a small diameter (high crown) at that length. High praise!
I mostly have tons of slippery elm and I think Russian elm around here, growing at all the rivercourses, vacant lots, and foothills. It's medium weight for elm, covered in pin knots and lumps, and has a lot of soft brown colored heartwood. Not as good as American or Rock elm, but I still love it. Keep that stuff up!
-
Thanks Springbuck...sometimes you have to do the best you can with what you have available. I have American Elm so thats what I use. :D
-
Thunder, I'm glad you posted this bow you deserve the credit, cause that's a very nice bow. Great tiller also. Ever since the gtg in Summerville I have been looking at small trees a little different. Great job post some of the others also.
-
Hi thunder,
What a fantastic bow. I have a piece of 60" Ash I have been wrestling with using heat to straighten it out before the tiller begins. Was going to use it for my first crack at an East Woodlands style bow. I log on this morning, see your bow, feel inspired! Those nocks are exactly what I want. I know for a fact though my bow won't turn out anywhere near as good as yours!
Well done
Dean

I love 'em all, but when all is said and done bows like these are my all time favorites. That is a great bow.
Look forward to seeing more of your stuff. :)
-
nice congrats :)
-
Thunder may I ask if the bow width tapered smoothly from 1 1/4" to 1/2" nocks or was there any parallel taper before tapering towards the nocks?
Dean

OTDEAN
There is a parallel section for about 1/3 of the limb (above and below the handle area) then taper out to1" wide, the last 5" are tapered to 1/2". I hope that makes sense, there's a pic of the limb tips posted. If you need more/better photos just let me know.
