Title: Finally something I'm proud of
Post by: PrimitiveTim on November 12, 2014, 03:59:49 pm
I think I'm getting the hang of this stuff.  Novaculite is something that I have worked with a lot but never really got any good points out of... well I haven't got that many good points out of anything.  Anyway, what I've learned is that abrading constantly is critical, when pressure flaking you need solid platforms and LOTS of pressure, and you must be very patient.  This point I did in two sessions.  I got a decent biface going then the next day I sat down and finished it out.  Anyway, it's good to finally make something I'm proud of.  A couple things that didn't turn out as I would have liked; the notching is almost too close together and the flakes didn't like to travel through the gray area so there's a small lump.  Regardless, I'm still going to put it on an arrow :)

The other side is just white and it has a couple awkward step fractures toward the middle.  This is the pretty side though.

I'd be proud of that one, too, Tim. Almost looks like heat treated coral.

That will look gorgeous on an arrow.  8) hafting it is one of the best things you can do to a arrowhead, I'd say.

You'll still be proud of that one 10 years from now. Don't ever let it go. That rock is about as pretty as any on the planet, and the flaking nice.

Y'all are so encouraging!  Thanks!  been at it for a while today as well.

That will look gorgeous on an arrow.  8) hafting it is one of the best things you can do to a arrowhead, I'd say.
I agree totally with that!  If I can't put a point on an arrow then I usually give it away.

Good looking point Tim. Was that from the stone I sent you?
Yessir I believe so.  I still got a few pieces from the box you sent me.  That stuff is really growing on me.

So here are a couple points from today that I'm fairly happy with.

Will definitely let you guys know. I got some stuff I found up in GA under the fire pit that I'll dig up tomorrow when it has cooled but I'd like to get a better understanding from you guys on how to cook rocks.

What is that one made of? Looks an awful lot like some slag glass that can be found around old iron furnaces.
