Title: fall bugs
Post by: lebhuntfish on September 29, 2014, 09:19:39 pm
This evening me and my neighbor took down our little swimming pool. (16' round above ground) About 10 min into the project these giant misquotes started attacking us. They are some of the biggest one's I've ever seen in south west Missouri.
We were almost done, all we had to do was pull the tarp out that was under the pool and hose it off. We slid it off the sand and while straightening it out we saw a lot of spiders of all shapes and sizes.  Including this nasty little creature.

The living spider in the photo is the female. The dead one below was the male...her "date", so to speak. Life's tough in the insect world.

To bad the darn spiders don't eat the skeeters!
Fruit flies and stink bugs are getting bad here with
our Indian Summer.

Too bad they can't invent a micro-drone that flies around the house killing mosquitos and houseflies. Put a tiny camera in it and it could be as entertaining to watch as the gun camera footage from WW2 P-47 and P-51 strafing runs on Wehrmacht trains and convoys.

I was putting up some new storm doors for a guy last week , nice fat Brown recluse in the box. Then Sat went out to the barn to get the goats pack bag and clean it up to hit the trail , nice fat Brown Recluse again. Tis the season.

Yeah it's definitely a black widow and her date!
The bugs this fall are worst I've seen in years! Patrick

There is an excellent TED talk about using lasers to shoot down mosquitoes... Worth a look.

When we'd go see my granddad, he always said, "Look here, boy. You gotta check the seat and hole of the outhouse BEFORE you sit down. Got that? Come on out here, let me show you how it's done."  He then showed how to use an L-shaped stick to run around under the rim of the hole to make sure no Black Widows or Brown Recluse spiders were hiding out under there. Where's the toilet paper, grampa? "It's right there, boy! Ain't you got eyes?" All I see is an old Sears catalog, grampa. "Yeah, like I said. The toilet paper is right there in front of ya, son!" Nothing went to waste in his house.

We had a cabin in the Big Cypress Swamp, and an outhouse, for awhile, till my Dad and cousin set up a water tower, and Pump, and got real indoor plumbing.
But when we had the outhouse, I would take a stick, and a can of raid, and a lighter, when I used it, and of course a flashlight at night.  Well we have a big spider down here in Florida, we just called it a roach spider, but it was pretty much just a BIG brown recluse.  It wasn't a recluse, but I know my Dad got bit by one, and it made a mess on his hand.  Anyway, I would take the stick and whack the toilet lid, and seat  a few times, and then carefully lift them with the stick, and then light the lighter, and spray the raid, all around the rim of the hole, and you could hear a lot of "Things" dropping down. :o  Always made a couple of passes, just to make sure.  And I never caught the outhouse on fire!  ;) 8)  I had one of those big roach spiders jump on my hand one time, and I almost flung my hand off of my wrist!  I was slinging my hand so fast and hard, that when the spider was slung off, it hit the wall, and splattered.  My wrist swelled up, and was sprained, but I was not about to let the thing bite me.  They have big fangs!  As a kid we would take a stick and get the big Golden Silk Spiders, and fling them into another web.  Sometimes they were dinner, and sometime they were the diner. :P   ;)  Not a big fan of spiders, nor scorpions, though I did raise some big ones for awhile.
