Post by: tattoo dave on September 05, 2014, 08:48:43 am
So I picked up some walnut dowels crazy cheap. Just wondered if anyone has made walnut arrows.

I have and they seem to make pretty good arrows. The ones I made were from dowels made by Ken75. He used to be a member here.

I have a bundle sitting here since quite some time. The stuff doesn't look like potential arrow material to me. JMO...

It works well as a footing.  Good color.    Never tried to make shafts.  I would think not, but not sure why I think that.

The two arrows on the left are made with black walnut shafts. I made 6 total and gave all but these two away.

Thanks fellas! I only bought 3. So it can't hurt to give it a go. And obviously it works for Pat. Good enough for me. I'll post pics when I'm done, hope to get some made this weekend. I'm finishing up a short muscle wood bow, that needs some arrow.

Pat - - that second arrow from the left - - the one with the blunt point - - is that a carved part of the shaft or is it a glue on point of some kind?

Ken started these shafts off with 1/2" square stock. The one end that he chucked in the drill was square for about 2" then transitioned to the 11/32" shafts. I just rounded the corners of the square area and gave it a sinew wrap for strength.
