A fried of mine gave me an Osage log he'd bought from Easter Europe of the interweb. I said I'd make him a bow and there would be one for myself too.
Anyhow the Osage wasn't the best, but I made him this NA style bow, based loosely on the Choctaw bow on p52 of TBB vol 2.
He can decorate it, make a decent string and have some fun with it.
For the full draw shot I used the NA arrow with stone tip that Rich (Half Eye) gave me, it adds to the picture.
It's only the second time I've used Osage and it great stuff, it just loves bending, but certainly likes to run along the grain and give you splinters. It also helped me see why you guys use a scraper more for tillering, I found my drawknife used edge on like a giant scraper would take off lovely shavings without snagging the grain whilst leaving a good clean surface. More pics and details on my bowyers Diary of course.
It was supposed to be 40# at 26" but I've had trouble getting the weight down, oh boy that stuff it tough  so it's nearer 45# (well that's what I'm telling him ;)... more like 47# >:D )
Hope you like
Del
(couldn't resist taking a pic of it in a Yew tree to tease you guys ;D )

Del, thats a nice one
Beautiful bend!
Could be the camera angle or canting the bow - it looks like you are nocking very low?
Always a wonder how little wood is needed to make decent weapon.
-
Yeah, it's canted, but I prob' am just nocking low, temporary string, no nocking point, lazy inept setting up of the shot, I didn't loose it. I'll get my
lawyer people onto it ;)

I came here for the pic of Del in a loincloth... but I guess you didn't go THAT primitive :P
Oh well, the bow looks really nice anyway
-
nice bow Sir del...you friend will never notice the 2 extra pounds...lol
-
Very nice bend right there. The little bendies are sort of addictive though >:D I,m sure that if your friend wants a NA style bow that ought to make him very happy indeed.

Very nice Del.
It's easy to see that the bow is canted, would have to be with that stance
-
Nice work Del.
-
That's a beautiful bow, I love that style and that character. Well you have gotten to work osage twice as much as me.

Good job Del!
yes Osage loves a scraper and heat for corrections that is for sure
Glad you got to work on some!
-
Nice bow. Great style and execution
-
Great looking little bow, Dell. That's a butt ugly piece of Osage, but even ugly Osage makes a fine bow. Glad to see you go Native, unbuttoned shirt and all. ;)
-
That looks like a shooter Del. great job
-
Great looking bow Del but I have to admit I was looking forward to seeing you in loincloth and headress also:)
-
Sweet bend on that native style osage. Just the right amount of character in that thing.
-
Very nice bow Del,looks like it is Hot over there. ;) :)

Cool del!! :)
-
It doesn't matter what the wood, you make a good bow Del! Cheers

Tell your friend that the bow is exactly 18.18 kilos of draw weight, but that you tillered it out using avoirdupois weight and that in pounds it just sounds heavier! >:D
I was picturing Del's face with warpaint (lipstick and rouge from Mrs the Cat's side of the bathroom) and was excited to see the results. I must admit I was disappointed at first until I started looking at the bow.
Nice work, Mr. the Cat!

Beautiful tiller, Del.
Did you cut across the back of the knot?
Osage is tough but I did see a friend's osage break there.

I lightly rasped off any loose stuff, the hole is much bigger from the belly side. The knots bulge up a fair bit so the wood is thicker. I was a bit nervous when I had to keep thinning it to get the draw weight down.
Here's a view from the belly side.
Note:- you can see the L L L for "leave" pencilled near the edge where there is dip in the grain.
