Title: Yew reward bow
Post by: Aaron H on July 11, 2014, 12:50:52 pm
61" NtN
50# @ 28"
Pacific yew
Buffalo horn tip overlays
Heat treated belly
Strunk style grip done in elk leather with buckskin lacing

This was my first attempt at a yew bow (my fourth bow total).  I told a friend that I would build him a bow of his choice if he could stop smoking for six months. Well he did good on his end, and I am happy with the results of his reward. He traced his lineage to the Anglo-Saxons of Europe, so he asked for an ELB. I feel like this is a more modern take on what the Anglo-Saxons may have used.

I started with a nice piece of Pacific yew with quite a bit of natural deflex. The deflex was pretty stubborn, so I worked with what I had. This stave also had some very thick sapwood. After I shaped the side profile I decided I wanted to thin down the sapwood, so I chased a ring leaving about 3/16" but left the ends stacked up to avoid whipped ends.

Finally, I branded it with an Eihwaz, which is Anglo-Saxon for "yew", and sealed it with four coats of Tru-oil.

I think I might have to find some more yew for myself!

Yo, I really like that, a nice homage to an ELB.
A sort of shorter punchy version, I don't s'pose they were all 8' tall warbows.
You can see it has plenty of bend and great tiller in the FD shot...
Only one thing wrong with it.
..
...
I didn't make it

I'll bet that is quick with the heat treated belly.
I hope your friend stays of the cig's...

lOVE THAT DESIGN.  I've made a few in hickory and ipe laminations with the modern tip.  Hey.. there is nothing there that they dind't have the technology to do.  Who knows.  I've also read that prior to the english long bow they tended to be a bit shorter.

That is a sweet bow Falcon.  I like that design and that Eihwaz brand is a nice touch.

Great looking bow, Aaron. That's top shelf. If that's your 4th bow you have a bright future (and present  ;)). I'm sure your friend is stoked.

My friend was very happy with the bow.  Turns out his brother really liked it too, and wants to do a little trading for an osage bow.
