Title: Moose Skinner
Post by: Zuma on June 02, 2014, 11:26:38 pm
This morning was made for porch sitting. Soft and clear.
Exellent for carving and nit- picky hafting. To bad the moose
numbers are down in the north east.

Thanks never seems to be enough. A check would be nice but I am not developed enough to write you all one. So thanks, from down deep.
I took a apple tree branch and dried it a couple years. Picked a place where the knots would be at the haft and the butt.
Here is a better pic

Very nice, I thought it was leg bone of some type for the handle. :)

Thanks you all.
Pappy, It could pass for bone as I made it non symmetrical.
If it was ash or hickory! To much color in the apple.

Very nice work. Multi-talented for sure. I also liked your carvings. The gouge marks gave me some indication of size. Carving in the round is a bear on large pieces due to checking but you handled it nicely. Most all of my carvings are small now as I don't seem to have time. I do like to embellish my forged knives and such and I just finished a Kuksa that I took to the Classic. The music a person listens to, the tv shows he watches and the workshop he keeps says a lot about a person. Much more than some believe. I'd rather be making SOMETHING in my shop than anything else I can think of. Nobody admires a craftsman more than another craftsman. This is why so many of us make our own bows. We could buy it but it wouldn't be the same. Your articles are always interesting. If ever I can figure out how to send in pics then I might show a few things I make.

Try this--- "posting picture" by  hopewell point
It's in Flintknapping last post on page one.
Could make page two at any moment. lol
Here are some from the past.  Not sure if I ever posted them?
Well, maybe elk skinners.

Nice knives! I'm wondering how well the hafting lasted in real use? Do you think they spent a lot of time re-hafting or do they seem robust?

You'd be surprised how well the primitive hafting works. Pine pitch, sinew/rawhide, and pitch sealer makes a tight bond and is easy reworked.

Don,
I must agree with stringmam. Although I admit I take a short cut or two.
It takes time and effort to do things the old way but without the abilities and
insight of our ansestors we would still be in trees.
The best message here is, can you improve the "cutting edge" lol
Not just knives but space, deep sea, and most of all Human Relations.
Thanks for your contributions.
