Title: The family that makes bows together stays together!!!
Post by: blackhawk on March 20, 2014, 09:12:23 am
A few of my family members need a new bow and I ain't making them all >:D(even tho it might be faster if I did..lol ;D)...so last night they invaded my man cave for an hour and a half...they got there choice of any kind of wood(self bow,or a lam bow)..the oldest picked out a black locust stave(n him n I will be working his later)...the wife picked out an osage stave(given to me by Clint aka osage outlaw..thanks pal) for a self bow...she just had to have osage even tho its prob the toughest to work..I guess a yew or red cedar would've been just too easy for her...she can handle the ride tho,cus she's a tough West Virginia gal ...

Here she is starting to remove the bark

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_171605_684.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_171605_684.jpg.html)

It took several times showing and explaining how to chase a ring, and how to yield a drawknife...and at the same time I was monitoring all those young yahoos as well!!!!

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_171712_803.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_171712_803.jpg.html)

My two year old baby girl rasping away on some cedar!!!

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_171858_355.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_171858_355.jpg.html)

Our oldest daughter was waiting her turn to use the rasp and asked "can I rape the wood"....we both had to keep straight faces when she said that...it was tough..lol.

Well...the wife only got a few rings down half way across, but she actually picked it up pretty fast and was able to follow a ring all that way down..she wasn't fast about it,but she did really good, and pretty much got the technique down...thought I'd never see the day with a drawknife in her hand making a bow...she actually enjoyed it!!! Sweeeeet..oh wait? Now I need to find a new place to "get away", cus now my shops gonna be invaded by girlie cuties!!!!lol

This was where we ended, and since everybody did so well daddy took the family out for dinner after...

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_182758_740.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140319_182758_740.jpg.html)

I'll keep posting progress of where everybody's is....its gonna take awhile tho so be patient ...thanks for looking

That is so awesome.  My wife only fusses when I track Osage dust back upstairs on my boots!  She has no interest at all.  Both of my sons have given it a go, with the older one, Zach, having a hickory bow about halfway done.  He hasn't touched it in months, though.  My younger one ,Isaac (Biscuit), has hacked around on various scraps and generally ends up just slaying various evil beasts of his imagination with an Osage sword.  Cool pics there, Hawk.

Thanks guys...yeah maintaining order was fun while trying to teach my wife while the younglings had sharp tools in there hands ;) kept me on my toes ;)

Greg that's usually what happens here as well with my two youngest ones...they just like to use the tools and destroy scrap pieces of wood, then end up sword fighting..lol. last year my youngest boy and I actually cut a sapling down together, and he did a lot of the work all the way till tillering,n it ended up breaking on us close to full draw :( ...we were bummed cus we spent all that time together on it(but I guess the time spent together was worth more :)..) ....I have an osage kids blank already to go for him ready for tillering,n I'll have him help me on it and tell him where and how many times to scrape etc...

Very cool, will be interesting to see how the bows progress.

Nice to get family involved in things you can enjoy together, but you've most definitely lost your man cave, it's become a family workshop at this point. Worth the sacrifice though.

That looks fun. I made my son promise to get his school and chores done so we can go out and work on our Projects when I get home from work today.

Not much of a better way to build family bonds then building stuff together. Love it.

Chips off the old block!  That's awesome Daddy!  Nothing feels better than to share our passion with our kids!  Kudos to you wife as well!  I show my wife a finished bow I've worked for a few weeks on and she says, "oh ok".   :o :P

My younger one ,Isaac (Biscuit), has hacked around on various scraps and generally ends up just slaying various evil beasts of his imagination with an Osage sword.

You are a lucky man.  I chose to not have kids in this life and I have to slay my own monsters!  Count your blessings!

Chips off the old block!

Shavings off the old stave?

Call it what you will, but it's pure wonderful as far as I can see.  Pure, distilled wonderful!

Thats a great way to make some family memories Chris, looks like everyone was having a good time too. Who knows, after they get a couple bows under their belt they become just like dad and start cranking some killer work at breakneck speed. Have fun with em' brother, they grow up before you know it. :)

That's really cool, glad you could get the family involved! When I started my wife complained a little, now I find her coming out to the garage to see what I'm doing and she actually helped me clean up some sinew. And draw out a board bow the other day.

Got the wife n kids back down in the shop yesterday...the wife continued to chase a ring on her stave as my 5 year old boy swung the hatchet like a lil mad man at a scrap piece of erc making him n his sister swords....lol. she did great following a ring and got half of one side all finished up,n the other half is at one ring above...so the ring is almost chased...we left two sapwood rings in it to give it a cool look(about 3/16" thick)...from the side its pretty white and from the back its yellowish white transitioning colors...it'll contrast nicely to the dark orange heartwood it has(Clint knows what I'm talking about)...so..anyways..another update... more to come..slowly

It looks like a pretty solid stick, I wish my old lady would try it. Then maybe she would stop asking my why I'm covered in sweat when I get in from the shop sometimes. Lol. Apparently when it's 9 degrees out one is not supposed to sweat. Women, go figure  O:) once I get some more wood my stepson wants to make a bow with me. My 3 year old wants a bone and arra. I plan on making her one sometime as well. Good for u man. Beautiful family.

I'm really glad we get to work on this together, I'm starting to appreciate ALL the work that goes into making a bow!
I'm not gonna lie, my arms and hands are killing me right now and I'm sure my back will be sore in the morning, but the 3 and a half hours in the "man cave" today were pretty awesome :)

we had another family day in the shop today, and everybody was getting on the action  :D

heres my two lil helpers sweeping up and cleaned up all the chips..they both got some money and a piece of candy  ;)

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_150701_926.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_150701_926.jpg.html)

I let the oldest break some of dads rock  ;)

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_160830_614.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_160830_614.jpg.html)

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_161015_425.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_161015_425.jpg.html)

he drove a pretty cool flake he was proud of...looks like a lil knife blade  ;) we might haft it up for him..but he did cut himself

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_161806_248.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_161806_248.jpg.html)

meanwhile the wife was chipping away at the bow...she finished off the ring and I had her draw the centerline  8)

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_154659_795.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_154659_795.jpg.html)

we then laid out the dimensions to the front profile  8)

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_160528_255.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_160528_255.jpg.html)

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_161039_614.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_161039_614.jpg.html)

then came some more physical fun...as much as I wanted to cheat and take it to the saw to cut it out I wanted to get her to at least reduce some of the meat off by hand to appreciate what goes into making a bow...

first we tried the hatchet but she wasn't to comfortable with that

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_165908_687.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_165908_687.jpg.html)

so we put it in the stave press and started to drawknive out the front profile instead

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_170217_074.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140506_170217_074.jpg.html)

she got one half of the front profile cut out before we called it quits for the night...and since everyone did so good I rewarded them to a night out to dinner.....at mcds

Nah!!!! Anyone who knows her knows its all an act!!!! I do..lol.

hahahaha

Uh, yeah.  Right.  I saw that haunted look on your face down at the Classic.  Your eyes were constantly darting around with that "watching for the cops" look that every married man has!  We know who wears the pants in your house....and
SHE picks 'em out for you!  Admit it, accept it, and be happy with it.  Look at the little benefits of it running around the shop!

Good to see you at the Classic again.  Thanks for the pointers on the crack bow.  I think it might survive tillering now!  Have fun in Marshall, she's donna do it!!!

Do me a favor?  Bring the wife and kids to the Classic next year.  I would love to meet'em.  They seem to be pretty fine folks.

Thursday mid morning we started to work on the bow up at the marshall shoot in Michigan(as derrick says..its a gooder)

first thing was to rough shape and cut some grooves in the tips to get a long string on it

(http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x436/blackhawk28/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140522_140337_005.jpg) (http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/blackhawk28/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140522_140337_005.jpg.html)

my battery died sat and so I didn't get any pics, but she got it shooting sat night after dark and took the first shots...I know guy and cody snapped some so hopefully ill get those from them

but I was able to get the battery charged for sunday...and here she is shaping the handle down so she can go shoot the course with it

Glad to see she got to shoot it on the range.  It was fun watching you two work on it together.  I can't wait to see the final pictures of it all finished up.

Now I suppose we will have to start a fund to get JW to Marshall
or better yet if he just stays in Tennessee for 3 weeks he can ride up with some of the others, Pappy should be ready to get rid of him by then!
Love to have ya Festus!
