Title: Sinew backed ash board
Post by: berzerk64 on March 07, 2014, 02:26:46 pm

64" NTN, around 1.375" wide at the fades, 62# at 31".  6 deer worth of sinew laid down in two courses (hide glue and sinew from Wilkie Collins).  Fortunately, I am in AZ, so the glue and sinew dried out quickly, laid the sinew in early Feb and was drawing 2.5 weeks later.  Shoots hard and fast, likes cane arrows better, but has been consistent with doug fir as well.  Does not care for modern material arrows (which is just fine by me).

Fairly plain jane.

My first post, looking for feedback.  I know the tiller isn't perfect, but I am happy with it.

Looks good, that is a lot of weight that you got out of a 1 3/8 ash board. Did the bow take much set?

Around an 1' of set.  That's fine by me, it actually shoots just a little softer because of it.  I am waiting to see how the belly holds up, I've only put around 100 arrows through it.

The mid to outer limbs could bend abit more but thats still pretty nice  ;).. I bet that ash/sinew combo is lovin the Az. climate. Welcome! How bout a pic or 2 of the back, tips, and unstrung profiles?... Brian

Once i get home I will put some more up.  I am lucky being out here, the lack of humidity allows me to work a lot better with the sinew and whitewoods.  I love hickory.  This is my first ash bow, really enjoyed working with it.

I did go for a bit of homegaard influence, left the outer limbs thicker, though I didn't narrow them as much as the holmegaards I've seen elsewhere.

Then your tiller is on target  :D.. My fastest/smoothest bow to date was a 45# ash board bow.. I love ash!.... Brian

Thanks!  This was my first attempt at that kind of limb, I am very pleased with the results.  Ash has taken 2nd place, only behind hickory, as my favorite bow wood.  With the humidity being in the 25-35% range every day, both do very well for me here.

Put a little stain to it.

Correction on the width at the fades, 1.45" wide, and 3/8 at the tips.

Nice bow! :)  The only comment I would make is check your nocking point...it appears to be pretty high and will really overwork that bottom limb over time.

Yeah that is a fresh string. Gotta put the square to it and tie on a nocking point.

Stiff tips,62# @ 31" should smoke an arrow...How's hand shock on that one?

It's not bad. Negligible with meatier arrows, noticeable with lighter spines, but not so bad as to disturb the follow through.

Looks cool! Looks like it would be fun to shoot!  Nice job.   It would be nice to hear how it holds up after more arrows.

Very cool man!  Thanks for sharing!  I'd bet you could bend a bit more in mid to outter limb and probably could take a good bit more wood off the outter 1/3ds.  Keep em comin!

There's some good advice given already :) No need for me to repeat that. The tiller might need some tweaking, but since it's already shooting, it may not be necessary.
However, what I do think is necessary, is to re-shape those string grooves. The grooves are currently at a 90 degree angle, while they should be at a 45 degree angle so the string rests into the grooves better. Also, the corners of the grooves are really sharp and need to be rounded. These sharp corners will wear down the string rapidly, which may result in a string break (which is essentially a dry-fire for the bow, which is really bad).

That looks like a good shooting bow.  I am sure there will be more to come and I hope you post more in the future.  Seems like you have gotten some good advice.  The guys on this site will have you building great shooting bows.  The way I feel, if a bow shoots straight, quiet, reasonably fast and feels good to my hands,  then it's a good bow.  Good to see some of your work. :)

Yeah, the nocks definitely need to come down some, holding off on further tillering until it gets a few hundred shots through to see how the sinew affects it.  It has been shooting well, consistent, no discernible hand shock with my doug fir arrows, and quieter than I have a right to expect.

All of mine will be boards for a while, there isn't much for raw materials here in SE AZ.  I have been keeping an eye open for some oak or mesquite, to at least try something local, but the Monument Fire a few years back pretty much burnt out any resources I can easily get my hands on.

Welcome and good job with that one.  Now on to the next!
