Title: Osage plains bows for two ladies (PART I) (No. 38)
Post by: simson on February 25, 2014, 07:52:34 am
This little bow comes from a belly split from a regular stave. It has lot of character, wavy and snaky and three holes from dead branches. I filled the holes with wild boar hair, on the belly side cut even with carefully worked out (concave) knot areas. The dark spots are the hairs cut even.
The lower tip has a triangular shaped nock, the upper is carved like a face and (instead of a horse hair tassel)  wild boar hairs glued into a slot. Nock shoulders are sinew (dyed with earth pigments)  wrapped, the upper in a shape reminding on a female body (at least me, haha).
Just two inches below the limb tapers wide because of a knot, reminding me on female hips.

42½” ntn
4½” brace
24” draw
30# weight

Enjoy …

Very nice!  Sort of an American Indian meets Europe kind of thing . . . with boars not being native to N.A.

That little sucker is way cool, very creative decoration and great tiller from a tricky stave split. Nicely done Simon. :)

I seal my bows mostly with a homemade hardening oil in about eight coats

Thanks everybody for the nice compliments!

I like how every part of your builds has a hand-made touch, from the earth pigments to your own brew of oil sealer.  You don't just plug a knot, you always seem to find some thoughtful way to turn stave imperfections into a feature to be admired.  Inspiring as always!

Thanks again, guys.

And yes that bow is not ment to be an authentic plains bow. I just did what came into my sense. I saw face tips on several historic bows, but this is no copy or so.
