Thanks 4dog,
Also, does bone need time to dry at all or is it ready from get go?
That may be a stupid question  :o

They need to dry good and be cleaned with acetone of something like that, they have a lot of oil in them that will cause problems with the glue sticking if not dry and clean. :)

The stuff I used was "bone" dry.  ...pun intended.       couldn't resist.

It had been sitting out in the sun for who knows how long when I found it...super dry.  It cleaned up real good and was easy to work with.

To Pappy's point  I would be concerned about the glue holding if it wasn't nice and dry.  No suggestions on how to get there.  here in AZ I would probably clean it up really well and set it out in the sun for a week or two....you could probably use a hot box too....just throwing out some ideas.

You can get bleached segments of bone from pet stores.
The Asiatic composite warbows from the past featured extensive use of bone plates in the grip and siyahs. You can see many examples online of excavated bone plates from grave sites.

For gluing bone to wood, whether it is baccula bone or rib, use a piece of fresh cut garlic to prepare the surface for gluing.   This is an old wood-working trick for gluing bone or oily woods.

Thanks Carson,
You just wipe it down with fresh garlic and let it dry first and then glue it up is all?

DuBois, once your ready to glue-up cut a a clove of garlic in half and wipe it across the gluing surfaces, then give it 20 mins or more to do its thing.  Apparently the fresh garlic juice reacting with air etches the gluing surfaces and cuts any oil.  I picked this trick up from a great book titled Hide Glue, historical and practical applications by Stephen Shepard.

Did it several times, for ex.: http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,41177.0.html
I have cooked the bones (cow) for a soup. Then cooked a second time to get all the fat out. No problems til now, pretty much the same procedure as horn or antler.

Yes, and then I have them in the dish washer for 3 or 4 rounds.
