Title: Your Opinion On This Tiller....BOW (almost) FINISHED!!!
Post by: arachnid on February 15, 2014, 04:59:25 pm
Hi Guys!

I`ve been working on a new bow and basicly finished the tiller. Now, before I continue working
on the finishig stages, I`d like to hear some expert opinion on my tiller.

The bow is white oak board, 68" tip tp tip, pyramid design (2" tapering to 1/2") with a slightly reflexed tips (glued on), limd thickness in about 14/32". This is a picture of it in full draw (26" in my case):

Well, what do you think?

Thx

Dor.

Looks good. Right limb may be a tad stronger. Did you string it? Jawge

Doesn't look like you did. Use a scraper now. Even off the tiller by making passes all the way on the right limb and checking. 10 passes, check. Jawge

 Arachnid,
Is your bow asymmetrical (one limb longer)?

burchett.donald- No it`s not. I missed a bit when I cut the fades on the handle block so it looks a bit longer in the picture.
George- I do use a scraper, but I didnt understand your advice- should I make 10 passes on the RIGHT limb?
to me it looks ok. I was thinking the LEFT limb is a bit stiffer. Can you clear that out please?

And, what did you mean by "Did you string it"?

Thx.

Dor.

You should be working with a short string by now, with a full brace height.
What's the draw weight? And what weight are you aiming for?
Tiller looks pretty good, and may need a little bit of minor tweaking if you can spare a few pounds.

What DarkSoul said x2,
I would like to see more pictures, unstrung and if you havent had a short string or had it at brace ht. I would like to see the difference.
But that is a cool bow!

Yes, the right limb. Take 10 passes. Check tiller ... continue. Once you even off the tiller go ahead and string it at a low brace height...say 3 inches. Then gradually increase the brace height if tiller is good.

Sorry about my poor typing skills.

George

No it's a pyramid taper - it's fine. The bend is good . Just that right limb is a bit strong.
Aim to start bracing your next bow somewhere around 18 -20 inches of draw. Brace it one inch high first, check, correct repeat until you've got brace height where you want it.

Guys, Thanks for all the comments (and compliments).
The bow IS braced. I`m in the finisheng stages of the tiller.

I`ll upload some more pictures in a few hours (when I`m back home from work).

That's looking pretty good man.  I think you could get away with just a few more scrapes in the outer third of the top limb.  Other than that it's looking like a shooter :)

  Arachnid,
Looks excellent from here, the flat spot on the left limb in your earlier pictures has disappeared... Nice work 8)

Hi Guys!

Well, first of all, thank you all for helping me finishing the tiller of this bow.
Its basicly finished and I have some pictures for you (I`d like to hear you opinion). Sorry about the poor quality of some of them.

Braced (I actually replaced the string so now it`s braced higher then in the picture):

Reflexed tips:
https://scontent-a-fra.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1/1655931_578157175607344_934762361_n.jpg

Handle:

Full draw (26" in my case):

Now all I need to do is shoot it about a 150 arrows, and if it holds, I want to paint and decorate the back (it`s brown paper backing)
and finish it.
