Howdy folks, this is a great site and i have learnt heaps off you guys so thanks alot.
kanuka [kunzea ericoides]/ white tea tree is a medium density hardwood tree native to new zealand and a member of the myrtle family. The wood is strong and hard and seems to have good elasticity. Early maori used it for tools and hand combat weapons.
This bow had some prop twist and a knot, the knot has a wiggle in the side profile. I tried to remove both with dry heat with moderate success. The knot ended up becoming the top limb. The bow is smooth drawing and nice to shoot. She is 61 n to n and pulls 46lb @ 26in.
cheers.

Thanks fellas. The photo is taken from a bit of an angle, but the top limb does have a bit more reflex.

Nice bow. Obviously good bow wood
-
Nice job, looks like you found yourself a good wood to work with. Are they common trees?
-
Great post! I think I enjoy seeing people creating bows from woods not well known as much as any other thing. That looks like great wood. Congratulations on it!
Good to see Kiwis on here, as well.
-
Sweet
Good Job
Must be good bow wood or an excellent bowyer, maybe both
Keep it up
-
Thanks for sharing. It is good to see a fine bow and learn something new at the same time.

Nice work!

Wow, thanks a lot! That means a lot coming from you guys. :)
Kanuka is a fairly common tree here, it acts as a regenerating parent tree for regrow forest and tends to favor the drier east coast. Theres a 135 lb bow built out of kanuka by a guy from the nz war bow society and it sounds like it's holding it's own amongst his yew bows.
The kiwi was draw on with sharpie pen.
I'm working with a few other native woods I'm hoping to show you guys in the future.
Cheers.

Welcome to PA! That looks like a sweet shooter right there! Well done :D
-
Nicely done, like the looks of that wood and the bow you made of it. Seems like it may have been a tricky stave to negotiate but you did an awesome job turning it into a bow.
-
Thanks fellas, yeah she ended up doing what she wanted in the end.
-
I do enjoy a bow with bumps wiggles twist and holes...fine job! ;)
