Never done this before, any thoughts or tips on how to start. Also on where to get material, I live in cedar rapids ia and spend quite a bit of time near birchwood wi if that helps.

I don't know your area, and I am also a beginner, so I can't speak to your questions, but I wanted to wish you welcome.  There are some very good people here, and on PaleoPlanet.  There is a site called ArrowHeadology, but getting access is almost impossible.  You might be one of the lucky ones. 
There are lots of instructional videos on utube.

Looks like you are ready to head down the Iowan Path!  Look up the thread by that name and contact iowabow.  He's a prime enabler of people wanting to become hopelessly addicted to breaking rocks.
