Title: question about bow lenght
Post by: adams89 on January 16, 2014, 05:20:18 pm
Hi everybody

I got a New stave of osage  its a little snake, but it has no major knots,
I would like to know your oppinions in the dimensions

I want to geht a 70 - 80 pound bow out of it.
My last one was 67 inches long and pulls 82# and im wondering if i can go shorter without a backing and without risking set

So please let me know what you think about the  dimensions.

Thanks Johannes

Johannes, What is your draw length?  For a 28" draw  you could go 64" to 66".  Make the bow a little wider than you did for the 67" bow.

I find the shorter length bows taking more set but I'm convinced it's because of my longer draw length (28 1/2) and I may have not left them wide enough for the length.

I just finished an 82#@29" osage. 65" long. I made it 1 7/8 at the fades and 1 1/2 mid limb. I used a 10" handle and fade area. It didn't take more than 1/2" set. I have pulled it out to 30". I plan to shorten it to 62" and keep the weight about 80#@28. Bow has about 1" induced reflex.

You should be ok with that if you don't use the pyramid design. Past 70# I might want to go a tad wider. I made mine extra wide because of the odd tiller I used.
