Title: yall ever make a yo-yo before?
Post by: sleek on December 14, 2013, 10:50:45 pm
My son is getting a home made christmas this year and I'm onto the third gift. A yo-yo. Or I should cal it a yo, cause it won't yo again. How do you get the blasted thing to return? I feel like such a schmuck...

My brother is all into yoyoing and I'm pretty good myself.  Could you explain the design or post pictures?

Well it a single piece of ash that I spun on my drill press. I drilled a hole in the spindle to insert the string in for instant return. Will post a pic in a bit.

Ash might be to light, try a heavier wood

Too light? As in not enough momentum? Well Ill be.... Reckon I will break out the osage then. The Yo-yo is only about 2 inches in diameter. Maybe I could add some weight. Or go to the store and get some birds eye maple. Wonder what lowes has in stock. Any good dimensions for wood types or weights they should be?

Tape a pair of 1/2"  bolt flat washers to it and see if it makes a difference in how it yo-yo's

Well I figured out the problem after trying the washer idea and a few others... My spindle was way to large in diameter. I had to thin it down. The smaller the spindle, the slower the yo you goes down the string, and as a result, the better it climbs back up it. Now, that I got the one of ash working, I need to get the osage working. As beautiful as the osage turned out, I am glad the ash didnt work to start with or I wouldnt have made the osage one :P Reckon the ash one will be a tree decoration.

Now you need to learn to make one that will "sleep" so you can do tricks like walk the dog. I don't imagine you could do one like that with all wood. Would need a metal spindle.

Wow thats pretty cool! I used to love playing with my yo-yo when i was a kid it ised to be my grandfather's. Hmmm all the woodworking and carvings i do and never thought to make a yo-yo. Thanks for the inspiration maybe ill make yo-yos for my kids and maybe they'll pass it on to their kids one day.
