My lab is sick. He wont eat or drink. Day before yesterday he was fine. Yesterday I saw vomit all over the yard. He cant eat or drink anything without throwing up while trying. He doesnt want to move this morning. If he is alive when I get home, I am taking him to the vet. I have had him 3 years since he was a pup. Im going to miss this guy if he goes, but now I am worried about this spreading to my Husky and other little mut. I cant loose all my dogs..... Nope. I cant loose them all..... They are in a seperate area from the lab right now.

The daughter had a chocolate Lab same thing happened she had cancer in her spleen. Hope everything is OK.
-
Depending on what the vet tells me... I need to figure out what is most loving towards the dog. Let it suffer in hope of recovery? Life is the most beautiful thing in the world after all. Opposite side is, the painful death risk. If I decide to put him down, Do I do it myself, or leave him with a vet to do it? I know I'm going to be sick either way.
-
Hope he gets over it, whatever it is. I wouldn't be worried about putting him down just yet. Dogs can be very resilient, sometimes it's surprising what they overcome. The main thing is to get him the help he needs. If I was you, I'd get him to the vet ASAP.

A buddy of mine had something weird happen to his dog and waited a couple days to long..Dog had a twist in his gut.. AS CAM SAYS GO TO VET... Hope everything works out.. Hard to lose a good freind
Thanks Leroy
-
Leroy is right. Labs are more susceptible to bloat (twisted stomach) than other breeds. It is not uncommon at all. The symptoms you described sound like that could possibly be what is going on. If that is the case, time is of the essence. If the stomach is twisted, there are likely blood vessels that are restricted, or pinched off all together. The faster the dog is treated, the less internal damage there will be.

Vet says X rays look like an internal blockage. Maybe he ate some trash that got stuck. My across the fence neighbors are very trashy and I find garbage in my yard all the time. Doc listed me a $1,200 bill for the surgery. In the mean time he gave Koda anti nausea pis, and a shot, with de-wormer, just in case its worms causing him to be so sick as he does have some signs of worms.
I really dont know what to do here. Doc says if its a blockage, it could rupture and he could get an infection in his bowels. Then we would be in a medical emergency for sure. Also, that could happen at any time. On the other hand he admits he could be wrong, and said if Koda isnt better in 48 hours, from the anti nausea meds and drinking water then we have to hospitalize him. I need to squeeze his belly every few hours to check for pain. If he reacts to his belly squeezed, then its ruptured.
Bottom line, I have to let money dictate what will happen to my dog. I spent $500 today I dont have and have run out of orifices to pull money out of. Crossing my fingers and hoping he pulls through on this. Wish i knew the future so I can know how to handle this.

I know where you are coming from, Sleek. Prayers for you and the pup.
-
I hope it works out good for you and your dog. Sometimes these things take a couple days to work out. Good luck.
-
I just got him to take a bite of food. Literally just one bite. More than he has eaten in 48 hours. And he just drank water keeping it down. I only gave him half a cup. Dont want to over do it. The anti nausea shot must be working. Still, its encouraging....
-
Hope it works out,I lost 2 last year and it's not easy to take. They were 8 and 11 years old. On the other hand and I know it sounds bad but I ant going to spend 1,200.00 on a dog. Love my dogs and care for them really well ,but they ant my kids. :(

Hope everything works out fine... 1200 is a lot... I do agree with Pappy... A vet wanted 3000 for surgery for a cat!!! Cat is still alive and doing fine 5 years latter... Do what you can the best you can
Thanks Leroy

What sucks too is, I swear I could do this myself. Problem is, Goverment thinks that needs to be illegal.
Koda was still alive this morning when I went out annd checked on him. He seemed happy to see me, but I really had to coax him out his dog house. I squeezed his belly several times and he seemed to be enjoying the attention. Spent about 5 min outside with him petting him, then went inside for breakfast. I couldnt get him to drink anything though. Hopefully he is thirsty when I get home.
-
best of luck, hope he is getting better.
-
Hopefully he will come through. Sometimes things like chicken bones or pork bones can cause these problems. One of my dogs had a problem with them. All my dog eats is dog food.....other that what he finds.
-
Sure need to get some water in him,I have used a syringe to get it down mine before and try and give him something very special to eat,if you can get water down and a little food he may just pull out of it. What is Illegal ? :-\

Doing the surgery the vet says he may need myself is. I am getting him to eat very small amounts of wet bread and a few laps of water. His energy is a little better. He actually stands up on his own and will even come to me when I call him. Though its obvious he would rather stay in his dog house. He actually had the energy to bark a little yesterday. This morning, not so much, but he did come to me for his meds. I am on the fence on whether he will come through or not. Doc says if the Xrays are correct, the blockage is whats causing him to vomit everything right back up, but the anti nausue pills seem to be working, and if its a blockage they really shouldnt be, so IDK whats up with this dog right now. I just have my fingers crossed.

How bout some type of laxative? couldn't hurt to ask the vet. I've been following the post, worried each time I see you have posted again. Hopin the best for ya sleek, dp
-
I asked while I was there last time, Vet said laxative is a bad idea. If its stuck its stuck. A laxative would just try to force a large object through a small hole and cause his intestine to burst. Thanks for the thoughts though.
-
Best of wishes Sleek, or moreso, your lab. Whats his name, and how you get him?
-
His name is Koda, from the movie Brother Bear, cause he looked like the character, and I like the movie. I got him off craigslist because I had been wanting a lab for a while to bread with my miniature australian shepard/blue healer, border collie mix. Also, who doesnt love a puppy? Good thing I got him too cause when I picked him up he was one very sick pup. Very bad with worms, and very upset entestinal track. I thought we would loose him as a pup he was so sick. Had him sleep in a laundry basket next to me at night. He would cry so much I could hardly sleep. But we got him all fixed up back then, and no more problems over the years till now.
Soon as I finally get in a place where I plan on staying, I really want some pups from him and my mini mixed mut. Both are stellar dogs. Already had one batch of pups on accident but wasnt in a situation where I could keep any. Beautiful and good ones all of them. One guy I work with loves his I gave him to death. He will talk about her all time. Look forward to being able to keep one myself one day.
-
he's most certainly dehydrated by now, any chance the vet can give him an iv to get so more fluid in him, I had a basset pup that got parvo and we did that once a day for I think 3 days, then white rice and cottage cheese for a week, with parvo it's the dehydration that ends up killing most of them, Lucille made it back then, but several years later got cancer
-
Good luck with everything, and let us know how the prognosis goes. Happy Thanksgiving. Hopefully things look up for you and Koda.
-
Koda is worse. He is to the point that all his energy is gone. His mouth is completely dry, no saliva, even in his throat, and he is now vomiting back bile. His nose is also completely dry, and his eyes wont even open all the way. I have spent all my money trying to save him. I think we will have to go on one last car ride and short walk in the woods, with my 22. I cant even afford the vet to do it. I feel sick.
-
I was hoping not to hear this conclusion.
I feel for ya Bro.
-
Just got back from the vet. I took him for one last visit, basically for justification. Vet said he can feel the blockage by hand now, where he couldnt a few days ago. Meaning it has moved. If it moved, there is a little hope. I say little because its still in the small intestine and there is a small valve between the large and small intestine it will probably get stuck in. Vet said that if by monday, Koda hasnt passed the blockage, then it will be time to make the call. He also offered to euthanize him for free because of my lack of funds.
In the meanwhile, Kodas blood work has shown that his hydration levels, he is about 5% dehydrated. 10% and the body starts shutting down. It seems he has enough working intestine to keep him somewhat hydrated. He is still starving though and the doc recommended baby food, hoping he has enough intestine to absorb some high in carbohydrate foods, even though he will throw it all back up. So, Monday.... take your time. Im in no hurry.

I am so sorry to hear this, buddy.
-
I feel for you Sleek I've had to put down a few myself over the years. Never easy no matter how well you know it is the rite thing to do. My last one was a few years back working a fence line in the mountains had to be done but none the less it still haunts me today.
-
I have raised countless litters of pups. I have had some luck with giving them hydrating enemas. to keep them re hydrated is the best thing you can do for them

Last night he Koda was trying his hardest to drink water. I was getting excited by how much we was drinking. I waited and watched, but then saw it wouldnt stay down. He almost fell over throwing up. He looked at me afterwards with a look in his eyes as if he knew he wasnt going to make it. Last night I petted him some but no where near enough. I hate that. I wish so much that I had more time with him that I cant swallow this damn lump in my throat. I went out this morning the check on him first thing. He wasnt where he usually was. I just knew I wouldnt find him alive. He was laying in corner by the house in tall grass. Right by my bedroom. The grass by his mouth smelled of vomit. I called his name and he moved his legs, and wagged his tail once. I moved him from that spot and called my wife over. She went in crying. I stayed out there petting him, listening to his shallow breaths. He exhaled twice deeply, then stoped. I talked to him the whole time. He waited on me to be there before he let go. Damn dog. Sorry boy. Wish I had spent more time with you more than I did. Thanks for waiting.
-
So sorry to hear that. :(
Pappy

I'm sure he was comforted by your presence at the end. We all go eventually, we just hope the people we love are there to send us off.

Sorry to hear this... Koda's at peace..
Thanks Leroy
-
So sorry to hear this. He was lucky to have someone like you to care for him.
-
Losing a dog is one of the toughest thing to do. I know how you feel and have my deepest sympathy.
Don
-
Sorry to hear that. That even caused me a few tears.
-
Thanks for being there for Koda all the way. I know there was some measure of comfort when he saw you coming for him.
Now he gets to run collar-free where the rabbits are slow and the squirrels can't climb trees. He'll be waiting there for you.
-
Sorry for your loss.
-
Thank you guus for your comments. I had to do one last hard thing a few hours ago. Tell my 7 year old. Koda was his dog. I spent the last week prepping my son for the reality of what was to come. He took it better than I did. I thought he would because he is a very emotionally independent person. I thought it was better to wait until my son got out of school so he wouldn't be distracted from school work, rather than tell him over breakfast. This sucks though. Seconddog we have had to burry in as many months. He is holding up well though. Very proud of him.
