Title: Need help - before she blows!
Post by: DQ on November 18, 2013, 12:27:39 pm
After thousands of shots, my BBO bow developed small cracks at a couple of pin knots on the belly of the lower limb.  I tried to get some super glue into the cracks but I would like to "fix" the problem.  What would you experienced bowyers suggest? Small belly lam? Silk patch? Siinew wrap? Or just shoot her 'til she blows?

Thanks for any (good) suggestions.  :)

Bummer Darryl, that's your baby! A .060-.080" belly lam and re-tiller would do the trick.

Darryl
Try a wood patch !
I tried super glue on one like it , that I had just put up with for years and then decided to fix , the first draw after the super glue she exploded !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think it changed the compression load to far all at once !
It was not bamboo backed  so maybe yours will handle the glue , I just did not want to share my bad times ,for your consideration !
Hope what ever you decide brings a smile  !

Those are easy enough to repair DQ. Use a round file to groove out that crack and replace with an Osage dowel/set with super glue gel. File/sand flush and refinish. I use this method a lot.............Art

That looks good, archer1, but where would I find an Osage dowel? Never seen such an animal around Michigan.  :-\

Pretty sure you can whittle one out.

Well DQ, I could whittle you one out and send it to you. Not!!!!!!!!!! >:D

You can make your own in probably 5 minutes tops. Take a sliver of Osage and reduce it through a metal drill bite gauge using an electric drill. Stop one size over and sand to a perfect fit from there. Now see how easy that was. ;D

I know osage is an awesome wood, but doesn't anyone see these knots before tillering and compensate for them by leaving extra wood like we did in the old days?
