Title: Cane in Virginia?
Post by: stringstretcher on December 12, 2007, 10:47:09 pm
Does anyone know, or willing to share a spot that I can go collect some river cane or switch cane in Virginia?  I sure would love to go and harverst it myself, just to say I did.

Where in Virginia?  It's a big state. I know a few places on the coast. But in general look alongside creeks and rivers, even lakes.

Here is the USDA distribution map for native switch and river canes (Arundinaria) in Virginia.

About 3 miles west of Charlottesville, on I-64, there's a big stand of cane between the East and West bound lanes. I always wondered if it was any good for rods, i.e. thick enough powerfibers.
